St. John Bosco Tuition Grants help students in need

On September 17, 2025September 12, 2025
Grant McGurn, For the Catholic Herald

The Catholic Diocese of Madison Foundation (CDMF) is blessed to work with endowment funds started by individuals who desire to make a positive impact on our Catholic community.

One of these funds is the St. John Bosco Tuition Assistance Endowment Fund, which provides tuition assistance grants to students in need at our diocesan Catholic schools.

The CDMF recently granted nearly $30,000 in support from the St. John Bosco Fund to 14 different Catholic schools across the diocese.

These grants are very welcome and well-received by both students and principals, and the “thank you” notes we get back are always very encouraging.

One such example is Principal Alison Stroud at St. John the Evangelist School in Spring Green, who said, “We have a number of families requesting assistance this school year, so this grant is very much appreciated!”

The CDMF Grant Review Committee uses specific criteria based on data provided by the superintendent of Catholic schools to determine which schools could benefit the most from these grants.

Some schools have a higher number of students who apply for tuition assistance or aid, and these statistics, along with other determinants, allow for the Grant Review Committee to make the most of the money available to be granted.

Upon receiving notice of a grant to St. Dennis School in Madison, Principal Matt Beisser said, “It truly does make a difference when the cost of everything continues to increase while the need skyrockets.”

These sorts of reactions let us know that the work we do at the CDMF affects the lives of those in our community.

We want to be able to help our Catholic community in the Diocese of Madison as much as possible with the assistance we have available.

A positive difference

The beauty of funds such as the St. John Bosco Tuition Assistance Fund is that they were started by individuals motivated to make a positive difference in the lives of others.

This sort of generosity is what allows for a true spirit of charity to flourish in our diocese.

Part of the beauty of these funds is that the donors have chosen to freely give to others.

2 Corinthians says, “God loves a cheerful giver.” It is clear that God is calling all of us to give so that our souls will grow closer to Him.

A gift of generosity

The minimum amount required by the CDMF to start an endowed fund is $25,000.

If you or your family have the means to do so and would like to create a permanent gift of generosity that matches a specific, Catholic purpose you wish to support here in the Diocese of Madison, we would love to speak with you.

For others, perhaps you feel God is inspiring you to give even a small amount to an already existing fund that serves a worthy cause.

I would encourage you to visit our website at https://www.diocesemadisonfoundation.org/to see the list of funds we have or diocesemadisonfoundation.org/st-john-bosco-tuition-assistance to learn more about the St. John Bosco Tuition Assistance Fund.

The opportunity to give helps us all answer the call to our mission as Catholics.

You are welcome to reach out to us anytime at 608-821-3048 or g[email protected]

We believe every financial gift is a grace-filled opportunity from God, and it would be our privilege to help you fulfill your philanthropic goals.

Grant McGurn is the operations manager for the Catholic Diocese of Madison Foundation (CDMF).
