Sr. Mary Clemente Davlin, OP, dies

SINSINAWA, Wis. — Sr. Mary Clemente Davlin, OP, died December 19, 2017. The funeral Mass will be held at the Dominican motherhouse, Sinsinawa, December 28, 2017, followed by burial in the Motherhouse Cemetery.

Sr. Mary Clemente made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican August 5, 1956, and her final profession August 5, 1959. She taught English for 50 years and was a prolific writer. Sr. Mary Clemente is the author of The Place of God in Piers Plowman and Medieval Art,

and A Journey into Love: Meditating with Piers Plowman. Besides her scholarly contributions, she was perhaps best known as a devoted, caring teacher/mentor who touched thousands of lives during the course of her life. Sr. Mary Clemente’s love of music focused on the violin, an instrument she treasured. She served in Wisconsin and Illinois.

In the Diocese of Madison, Sr. Mary Clemente served as teacher, assistant professor, and professor of English at Edgewood College, Madison, 1956-1959 and 1963-1970.

Sr. Mary Clemente was born March 6, 1929, in Chicago, the daughter of John and Margaret (Ryan) Davlin. Her parents preceded her in death. She is survived by cousins and her Dominican Sisters with whom she shared 61 years of religious life.
