Diocese to host youngest U.S. bishop for lecture

On November 4, 2010October 15, 2024
--

MADISON — Bishop John Barres of Allentown, Pa., will present the next talk in the St. Thérèse of Lisieux Lecture Series on Thursday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m. at the Bishop O’Connor Center, 702 S. High Point Rd.

A lively and engaging speaker and deep thinker, Bishop Barres will explore some of the exciting signs of renewal in the Church today, as well as some of the serious challenges we face.

Bishop Barres, currently the youngest bishop in the country, was born the fifth of six children to Oliver and Marjorie Barres, Protestant ministers who met each other at Yale Divinity School, but later converted to Catholicism in 1955. Bishop Barres was baptized by Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen.

Bishop Barres studied at Princeton University, where he played on the basketball team and obtained a B.A. in English literature. At New York University’s School of Business Administration, he earned a M.B.A. in management. He received a Bachelor of Sacred Theology in 1988, and a licentiate in systematic theology from the Catholic University of America, where he received his seminary formation at its Theological College. He then furthered his studies in Rome at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross, earning a Licentiate of Canon Law in 1998 and a Doctorate in Spirituality in 1999.

Bishop Robert C. Morlino has invited all Catholics in the diocese to attend the lecture November 11. For more information, or to register to attend this free lecture, visit www.madisondiocese.org/stls
