St. Ambrose Academy presents Singin’ in the Rain

MADISON — Sold out. Filled to capacity. Past St. Ambrose Academy (SAA) musical productions like Mary Poppins, The Wizard of Oz, and The Sound of Music have drawn full-house crowds.

SAA student actors have built a reputation for excellent, entertaining musicals that frequently earn Jerry nominations and awards for their on-stage and behind-the-scenes talent.

Latest show

But, what about the latest SAA show, Singin’ in the Rain?

Teens visit Religious communities

MADISON — Getting away for the weekend can often include a fun road trip, a new-to-you destination, and a lot of great memories, but for a local group, a recent weekend included something a bit atypical: Religious Sisters.

Last month, Fr. Greg Ihm, Diocese of Madison vocations director, led a group that included 10 St. Ambrose Academy students, a mother of one of the teens, and four other Madison-area women on a journey of prayer and discernment.

A ‘Nun run’

While Father Ihm’s primary role is supporting men in their discernment of the diocesan priesthood, he also seeks to make other opportunities available, especially for women.

An exciting start to the new year for St. Ambrose Academy

MADISON — The trials and challenges of a pandemic can’t stop the growth and joy of Catholic community, and spring 2021 is shaping up to be a season of exciting happenings at St. Ambrose Academy (SAA).

New home in the making

After dozens of property searches by a team of professionals and numerous conversations with potential partners, the Academy first shared in December 2020 at the interactive, virtual See the Joy Benefit Dinner news of great joy: A site for a permanent school home is being finalized.

The centrally located Fitchburg development will be an ideal home for the first Catholic school building project in the diocese in over 50 years.

St. Ambrose Academy to host extraordinary virtual benefit dinner

MADISON — On Saturday, Dec. 12, St. Ambrose Academy (SAA) is bringing the party to you.

We’re taking our annual gala virtual with the See the Joy Benefit Dinner @ Home Edition. And we invite you to host a watch party and join the fun!

Not just a Zoom conference

This is not just some Zoom conference though.

Instead of coming to a downtown Madison venue, you and your guests will gather at your home (or someone else’s!) to enjoy an interactive experience that will bring in a taste of the joyful, social atmosphere that is a hallmark of each SAA Benefit Dinner, which annually welcomes 600 or more friends and supporters.

The Learning Atrium expands its vision

MADISON — Necessity is the mother of invention, and for one mother, the source of a life-changing mission that is impacting children throughout the Diocese of Madison.

When Deb Krebs noticed her youngest son was not faring well with reading, beginning in kindergarten, she searched for extra help.

Discovering the Barton System, designed to address spelling, reading, and writing struggles for students with dyslexia, was a game changer.

Distance learning at St. Ambrose Academy

With school taking place in the home rather than in a classroom, St. Ambrose Academy (SAA), like schools everywhere, is having to adapt.

St. Ambrose Academy shifts to distance learning

MADISON — St. Ambrose Academy (SAA), along with schools around the world, has, practically overnight, become a distance learning school.

The academy closed its doors on March 13 as students hunkered down with their families in the safety of their homes against the onslaught of the coronavirus pandemic.

But, said Executive Director Joan Carey, “thanks to a heroic, all-hands-on-deck effort, St. Ambrose Academy reopened its door the following week over the Internet, where we continue to provide the best in education and classical learning for families.”

St. Ambrose Academy presents Singin’ in the Rain

MADISON — Producer Diane Marsland and Director Angela Hineline have earned reputations for making magic with St. Ambrose Academy’s musical productions by drawing greatness out of their student actors — nearly 40 percent of the entire student body — through a strong work ethic and an infectious enthusiasm.

Packed house crowds have roared with laughter and wiped away wistful tears, entirely delighted.

However, this year’s Singin’ in the Rain centers on 1920’s Hollywood stars Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont as silent films give way to “talkies.”

Essential to the musical are Hollywood sets for the footage of a silent film, a “talkie” flop, and a musical rewrite.

St. Ambrose Academy holds Service Day

MADISON — The St. Ambrose Academy Fall 2019 Service Day took the school’s junior and senior high students out into the community to serve at 17 different community organizations, parishes, and schools.

After several weeks of coordination, the student leadership team guided their peers from the start of the day to the end of the service projects. Having older students matched up at service sites with young students is one of many ways that the entire student body of 112 students can come together across the span of grades to build a strong culture of service and love for one’s neighbor.
