Our need for the real Thomas More

Next month marks the 50th anniversary of the film, A Man for All Seasons.

And if it’s impossible to imagine such a picture on such a theme winning Oscars today, then let’s be grateful that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences got it right by giving Fred Zinnemann’s splendid movie six of its awards in 1967 — when, reputedly, Audrey Hepburn lifted her eyes to heaven before announcing with obvious pleasure that this cinematic celebration of the witness and martyrdom of Sir Thomas More had beaten The Sand Pebbles, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Alfie, and The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming for Best Picture.

St. Ambrose Academy celebrates the saints at fundraiser for March for Life

MADISON — Each year, St. Ambrose Academy holds an All Saints Day party whose proceeds fund the students’ biennial journey to Washington, D.C., to march on behalf of the unborn.

Hundreds recently flocked to the wooded hills of southwestern Dane County on a sunny but crisp autumn afternoon for frolic and fellowship in support of the great cause of sending young people to the March for Life.

Saints alive!

Many of this year’s party guests dressed as saints: Gianna Mollo strolled about in a white doctor’s jacket, a little Kateri Tekakwitha rode on her uncle’s shoulders in a leather fringed wrap with feathers.

All believers are called to holiness

Occasionally I ask second and third graders to name someone who is kind, loving, forgiving, and reminds them of Jesus.

Often they reply grandma, grandpa, mom, dad, teacher, coach, friend, priest, Sister, or someone else. The person whom they name may be one of the countless uncanonized saints whom we honor on All Saints Day, November 1.

Remembering saints and all souls in November

We begin November by celebrating the feast of All Saints.

All Saints Day

On All Saints Day, we remember and we honor both the canonized and non-canonized saints of the Catholic Church. Both invite and inspire us to imitate their Christ-like lives.

Mass for deceased bishops and priests of Diocese of Madison

MADISON — Bishop Robert C. Morlino will celebrate a special Requiem Mass for deceased priests and bishops of the Diocese of Madison. November is a month when Catholics pray in a special way for the repose of the dead and, by God’s will, for the rapid entrance into heaven of the poor souls.

On Monday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m. at the Bishop O’Connor Center, Bishop Morlino, with clerical and lay ministers, will celebrate a Pontifical Requiem Mass “at the Throne” in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite.

MADISON — Catholic Charities (CC) of the Diocese of Madison held a groundbreaking ceremony May 20 for an expansion of the All Saints Neighborhood, its community for seniors located on the west side of Madison.

“The All Saints journey started about 20 years ago with an idea of providing independent living options for seniors,” said Jackson Fonder, president and CEO of Catholic Charities, in his opening remarks.

He welcomed Bishop Robert C. Morlino, members of the CC Board and staff, members of the All Saints Board, and residents and staff of the All Saints Neighborhood. Also present were many of the business people who have partnered with Catholic Charities in the All Saints project.

Fonder noted that the All Saints Neighborhood began with the developments of cottages, condominiums, and apartments for seniors.

Catholic Charities, the All Saints Board, and Horizon Development worked on Phase I of the All Saints Neighborhood, with the senior apartments managed by Meridian.
