MADISON — When Bishop Robert C. Morlino came to Madison as our new bishop in 2003, he said he hoped to practice BLT: “Badger them lovingly with the truth.”

Bishop Morlino has continued to practice BLT throughout his 15 years as Bishop of Madison. “That’s what I’m doing every blessed day,” he has said. “I know that some feel more badgered than others, but I hope to help them to be both badgered and loved.”

He will celebrate the 15th anniversary of his installation on August 1. He was installed as the fourth Bishop of Madison on August 1, 2003. The pro-life community in the diocese will be hosting a 5:30 p.m. Mass with Bishop Morlino at St. Mary Catholic Church of Pine Bluff, to which all are invited.

Joy in vocations

“My greatest joy continues to be in terms of the number of seminarians and vocations in the diocese,” said Bishop Morlino. “We pray that the Lord will continue to bless us.”

When he came, there were six diocesan seminarians. That number grew to a high of 33 seminarians.

Diocese marks 50th anniversary of Humanae vitae

MADISON — On July 25, 1968, Blessed Pope Paul VI promulgated his encyclical Humanae vitae.

The document reaffirmed the Catholic Church’s teaching about the duty of married couples to collaborate freely and responsibly with God the Creator in the creation of new human life, and therefore, the rejection of artificial contraception.

Nearly 50 years later, on the evening of July 21, 2018, the Diocese of Madison marked the anniversary with a Mass of Thanksgiving, celebrated by Bishop Robert C. Morlino of Madison, and a talk by Dr. Janet Smith, noted writer and speaker on Humanae vitae and related topics.

Meditate on Mary during month of May and special Fatima year

Dear Friends,

This month of May is, as always, a month for honoring and devoting ourselves to Mary, the Mother of God.

And in a particular way, as was marked by Pope Francis last week during his Apostolic visit to Portugal, we commemorate 100 years since the Blessed Virgin appeared several times to the three “shepherd children.” The two of those children who died in their youth are now Saint Jacinta and Saint Francisco Marto, having been canonized by Pope Francis on Saturday, and the third, Servant of God Sr. Maria Lucia, who only passed from this life in 2005, has her cause for canonization underway.

Fatima at 100: Story of apparitions continues to attract attention

While conversion and prayer are at the heart of Mary’s messages at Fatima, Portugal, the miracles and unexplained phenomenon that accompanied the events 100 years ago continue to intrigue believers and nonbelievers alike.

The apparitions of Mary at Fatima in 1917 were not the first supernatural events reported there.

Two years before Mary appeared to the three shepherd children — Lucia dos Santos and her cousins, Jacinta and Francisco Marto — they saw a strange sight while praying the Rosary in the field, according to the memoirs of Sister Lucia, who had become a Carmelite nun.

“We had hardly begun when, there before our eyes, we saw a figure poised in the air above the trees; it looked like a statue made of snow, rendered almost transparent by the rays of the sun,” she wrote, describing what they saw in 1915.

The next year, Francisco and Jacinta received permission to tend their family’s flocks and Lucia decided to join her cousins in a field owned by their families.

It was 1916 when the mysterious figure appeared again, this time approaching close enough “to distinguish its features.”

Plenary indulgence for Fatima 100th anniversary at Durward’s Glen

BARABOO — Pope Francis has granted a plenary indulgence opportunity throughout the Fatima 100th anniversary year. There are three ways of obtaining the indulgence.

Obtaining indulgence

To obtain the plenary indulgence, the faithful must fulfill the ordinary conditions, go to Confession and Communion, be interiorly detached from sin, and pray for the intentions of the Holy Father, in addition to the following:
