Walking with moms in need

MADISON — Along with so many other problems increased by the COVID-19 pandemic, many services for women seeking help with their pregnancies have been stretched very thin.

An inspiring new effort is taking place across the United States, to discover, share, and create new resources to help women and their families when they are in need during a difficult or unexpected pregnancy.

The U.S. bishops started a unifying and heart-warming task in 2019. It is called “Walking with Moms in Need.”

Mass, Eucharistic Procession during solemnity, pandemic

MADISON — In a nearly empty oratory at Holy Name Heights in Madison, Bishop Donald J. Hying of Madison celebrated Mass on March 25, the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord.

With concelebrant Vicar General Msgr. James Bartylla, seminarian Luis Reyes as server, and Office of Worship Director Dr. Patrick Gorman as cantor, the Mass was livestreamed via Facebook and YouTube and viewable to the public, unable to attend Masses during this time of the COVID-19 pandemic.

It certainly is a holy day, but presently not of obligation.

Solemnity of the Annunciation and Laetare Sunday

This column is the bishop’s communication with the faithful of the Diocese of Madison. Any wider circulation reaches beyond the intention of the bishop.

Dear friends,

Last weekend the anticipation of Easter joy certainly mingled with, and almost seemed to overcome, the more somber spirit of Lenten penance as we celebrated both the Solemnity of the Annunciation of Our Blessed Mother and Laetare Sunday, which captures in advance the joy of Easter and reminds us indeed of the destiny of Lent.

The Annunciation celebrates Jesus taking flesh in the womb of His mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary, the moment of His conception, free from Original Sin.

Mary, as she carried Jesus about in her physical body, became the Ark of the Covenant and the Tabernacle of God the Most High.
