Support your Church through the Annual Catholic Appeal

ACA artwork

In one way or another, every Catholic in the Diocese of Madison benefits from the Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA).

From your Baptism into the Catholic faith, through childhood, adulthood, and beyond, many of the things that have helped form you were enhanced or made possible because of someone’s generosity to the ACA.

In this special edition of the Catholic Herald, we highlight some of the ways the ACA has impacted lives.

Please take a moment to read these stories.

Then make a gift to ensure that these ministries will continue throughout these uncertain times.

Enclosed in this issue is an envelope; we invite you to fill it out and make a gift.

If you prefer, you can go to www.MadisonDiocese.org/acagive and donate online.

We also invite you to follow @madisondiocese on Facebook and Twitter.

There you will see updates on the impact of your donation — who it is helping, and the good it is doing.

2020 Annual Catholic Appeal: ‘Love Never Fails’

ACA logo

MADISON — When a priest becomes a bishop, he is tasked with choosing a motto for his episcopacy.

Usually taken from Scripture, it should be of some importance to the focus of that bishop in his service as a shepherd to the people entrusted to him.

As Bishop Donald J. Hying made this decision for his episcopacy, he chose, Caritas Numquam Excidit, Latin for “Love Never Fails,” which also doubles as the theme of the 2020 Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA).

Your donation to the ACA fuels the proclamation of the Gospel, the celebration of the sacraments, the religious formation of our youth, the training of seminarians, the good work of Catholic Charities, and supportive services to our parishes and schools allowing the Diocese of Madison to fulfill the true mission of the Church by making disciples of all nations.

Asking for support

This year’s ACA is, once again, seeking your help and asking you to prayerfully consider what you are able to do to support the important ministries that are impacted through your generosity.

In the coming weeks, parishes across the diocese will participate in an in-pew pledge/donation process. You will view a short video highlighting more of the ministries that the ACA supports, so you are able to get a good idea of where your donation is going.

MADISON — The theme of this year’s Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA) is “Love never fails.” If it sounds familiar, one of the reasons is that “Love never fails” is Bishop Donald J. Hying’s episcopal motto.

It is taken from St. Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians (1 Cor 13:8) that expresses the Christian doctrine that in all we do, we should do it with love.

At the ACA kick-off event held January 21 at St. Maria Goretti Church in Madison, Bishop Hying said this theme “captures the essence of the Gospel. God’s love always triumphs in the end.”

ACA chair couple

As a new initiative this year, Bishop Hying has implemented an ACA chair couple to serve with him in promoting the ACA and helping raise awareness of the appeal.

The first chair couple are Kellie and Michael Ryan, members of St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Belleville along with their six children. The Ryans have been strong supporters of the ACA since they moved to the Diocese of Madison from Pennsylvania over six years ago.

MADISON — Bishop Robert C. Morlino of Madison recently presented three checks to Jackson Fonder, CEO and president of Catholic Charities Madison.

One check, totaling $185,000, was from the 2017 Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA). This money came from additional proceeds made available when the diocese reached its giving goal for the year.

The Diocese of Madison has supported Catholic Charities with more than $400,000 from last year’s ACA.

2015 Annual Catholic Appeal: ‘Living Our Mission of Charity’

Annual Catholic Appeal 2015

MADISON — Have you ever modeled your charitable life around the Holy Family?

You may not give of yourselves the same way as Mary and Joseph did, but modeling your charitable giving through your time, talent, and treasure is your way of giving back.

One way to live your mission of charity is through giving to the Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA). Each year, the ACA asks each parishioner in the Diocese of Madison to prayerfully consider what they are able to give back to their diocesan Church. The Diocese of Madison lives on your generosity to support its missions — missions that are critical in helping our neighbors in need, teaching those that need education and training on our faith.

The Annual Catholic Appeal reaches every corner of our diocese in some way, here are just a few.

Marriage Preparation — Does your parish offer marriage preparation classes to those seeking the sacrament Sacrament of Marriage? The ACA funds the Office of Evangelization and Catechesis, which oversees the training and materials needed for marriage preparation classes around the diocese.

Catholic schools — Do you know of a child that attends a Catholic school? Just like every school district in the state, the Office of Catholic Schools is directed by the superintendent of Catholic schools. This office oversees all of the administrative functions supporting the Catholic school system in our diocese.

Catholic Charities — Has your parish community benefited from the Mobile Food Pantry? It travels around the diocese helping those that need that extra assistance at difficult times. This is just one mission that Catholic Charities does for our neighbors in need.

2014 Annual Catholic Appeal: ‘Beacon of Faith, Fire of Charity’

MADISON — As we prepare for Lent as a Catholic community, we prepare to give alms. What does it mean to give alms? The definition includes the charitable giving of money, food, or goods to people in need. It is one form of sacrifice we as Catholics are asked to perform during the season of Lent, just as Christ sacrificed himself for each of us.

This year’s theme for the 2014 Annual Catholic Appeal is “Beacon of Faith, Fire of Charity.” The focus this year is on evangelization and the Corporal Works of Mercy. The Annual Catholic Appeal funds both of those ministries, plus many others. Here are a few examples:

• Evangelization and Catechesis — Each of us as Catholics is asked to share Christ’s message through evangelization. The Church catechizes the young through religious education classes and adults through RCIA, retreats, and classes.

• Catholic Charities — As the Corporal Works of Mercy arm of the Diocese of Madison, Catholic Charities touches so many lives. They visit the sick through the Respite Care Program; feed the hungry and give drink to the thirsty through the Mobile Food Pantry and the Catholic Multicultural Center. These are just a few of the programs supported by the Annual Catholic Appeal and provided through Catholic Charities.

An opportunity to reflect on the Year of Faith

MADISON— “Beauty: Ever Ancient, Ever New” the theme for the 2013 Annual Catholic Appeal, brings forth an opportunity for all Catholics in our diocese to find the beauty God has provided in their lives. As we explore the Year of Faith and learn more about being Catholic, it invites us to look at our own lives and determine how we can enhance our faith and in turn share it.

As we approach the opening weeks of this year’s Appeal, we are drawn to reflect on our personal participation in this Year of Faith with a heightened sense of our role as a Catholic in our families and communities. The ACA supports that role and its measurable impact. Some of the important ministries we support include Evangelization and Catechesis, Catholic Charities, Seminarian Education, and Catholic education. Please visit www.madisondiocese.org to read more about the benefits of the ACA and the vital support it provides.

The $3 million goal for the upcoming year fuels ministry reaching out to all areas and walks of life in our diocese. Here are just a few examples of why your gift is so important to the ACA.

  • Evangelization and Catechesis: Provides retreats, classes, lectures, educational materials for young adults, engaged couples seeking the sacrament of marriage, catechists and educators, married couples learning natural family planning methods, as well as anyone looking to learn more about their Catholic faith.
  • Catholic Charities: Catholic Charities has been entrusted with conducting the Corporal Works of Mercy for the Diocese of Madison. Their work includes more than 35 programs serving the aging, children, individuals, families, persons with developmental disabilities, and those addicted to alcohol and drugs. It provides financial assistance to the Catholic Multicultural Center offering help to the underprivileged in Madison and beyond.

Catholic schools: Great gift to Church, society

One of the greatest gifts my parents gave me as a child was a Catholic school education. They recognized that a Catholic education would provide me with a foundation in faith, discipline, and knowledge that would serve me well not just through college, but for a lifetime.
