Writing contest open to readers in grades four through 12

MILWAUKEE — A book is more than just a collection of words.

A book can have a direct and concrete impact on a life. For children and youth, a book can help them transcend difficult situations — like bullying, peer pressure, or prejudice — or help them cope with loss and disappointment.

Writing contest

Letters about Literature (LAL) is a writing contest for young readers in grades four through 12, sponsored by the Library of Congress and the Wisconsin Center for the Book. Students write a letter to an author of a fiction or nonfiction book, a short story, or a poem describing how the work changed the students’ view of the world or of themselves. Students are asked to do reflective writing rather than a book report.

Share the spiritual journey with author/teacher Paula D’Arcy

MADISON — An automobile accident in 1975 changed Paula D’Arcy’s life forever.

She woke up to discover that her husband and daughter had been killed in the wreck, but the baby she had carried for three months was still alive inside her.

“Everything about my life altered at that moment,” she says. “I was at a fork in the road; I could despair, or I could go deeper.”

Drawing people back to the Church

LA CROSSE — Sherry Weddell has been crisscrossing the U.S. and the globe to engage Catholics. Her main concerns are that Church attendance is on the decline, many Catholics no longer believe in a personal God, and the Church is in need of reform.

I attended a diocesan-wide training in La Crosse in 2013 where Weddell spoke.

Sophie’s Squash author interacts with students

MADISON — Children’s book author Pat Zietlow Miller spent the day at St. James School on a recent Friday in October, reading her book, Sophie’s Squash, and helping the children decorate butternut squash as Sophie does in the book.

The mother of St. James sixth grader Sonia and Edgewood High School Junior Gwen felt right at home as she shared her own story of becoming a published author with the children in each of the classrooms, PreK to fifth grade. The sixth graders joined their first grade “buddies” for the story.

Author writes book to assist mothers in imitating Mary

Often sickly as a child, Catholic columnist and author, Marge Fenelon, spent many days lying on the living room sofa looking up at the picture of Mary and baby Jesus on the wall.

The print, a copy of Mother Thrice Admirable, was a gift to her mother from Fr. Joseph Kentenich, the founder of the Apostolic Movement of Schoenstatt, when Fenelon was just a year old.

St. Thérèse of Lisieux lecture to focus on Christ in The Hobbit

Joseph Pearce

MADISON — In a prestigious 1997 British readers’ poll, J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic fantasy The Lord of the Rings was voted the greatest book of the 20th century.

In the United States, a 1999 poll of Amazon.com customers selected this same novel as the greatest book not merely of last century, but of the millennium.

No less celebrated is this novel’s charming prequel, The Hobbit, as last year’s new blockbuster motion picture adaptation bears witness.

How did J.R.R. Tolkien’s devout Catholic faith influence his story telling and serve as a guide for communicating beauty, goodness, and truth in The Hobbit? How can this film provide a cultural means for evangelization?

World renowned Catholic author and EWTN television host Joseph Pearce will be exploring these questions and more at the spring St. Thérèse Lecture on Friday, April 5, at the Bishop O’Connor Catholic Center in Madison at 7:30 p.m. His lecture is titled, “The Hobbit and the Beauty of the Christian Life.”
