What we need in Church is transparency and total accountability

To the editor:

I have read Bishop Morlino’s letter regarding the continuing sex abuse scandal in the Church.

He asks  us to pray and fast, to make reparation for the sins of the priests and bishops who sexually abused children and adults, and for those in the hierarchy who covered up those sins.

Dealing with scandal within the Church

To the editor:

As we hear about and discuss the serious and continuing sex scandal within the Catholic Church, let’s start by placing the blame where it belongs — squarely on the failed leadership of the hierarchy of the Catholic Church. The failure has been caused by a lack of true leadership skills and being controlled by vanity and arrogance.

Robert K. Greenleaf was an advocate for Servant Leadership, and in the worldwide history of mankind, the greatest example of a servant leader was Jesus Christ. Jesus was critical of the Pharisees stating in Matthew 23: 2-3, 5, “The scribes and the Pharisees have succeeded Moses as teachers; therefore, do everything and observe everything they tell you. But do not follow their example . . . All their works are performed to be seen.”

Extraordinary men

To the editor:

Almost seven years ago I wrote a tribute to Msgr. Felix Oehrlein, pastor at St. Cecilia Parish in Wisconsin Dells, who had passed away. I called him “An Extraordinary Ordinary Man.”

When I wrote it, I realized that I had singled out one man and ignored a great many others. I resolved to address that oversight when the time was right.

What we learned from the John Jay study

In 2004, the John Jay College of Criminal Justice at the City University of New York published an exhaustive study called The Nature and Scope of Sexual Abuse of Minors by Catholic Priests and Deacons in the United States 1950-2002. …

For those concerned about recent news about sexual abuse by members of the clergy and hierarchy, this report is worth reading.

Take bishop’s words to heart

One of the first things Bishop Robert C. Morlino did after becoming Bishop of Madison was to promulgate a Policy Regarding Abuse of Minors, Sexual Misconduct, and Sexual Harassment on November 6, 2003. It was revised in 2016, and copies of this policy are available on the diocesan website (www.madisondiocese.org).

Bishop Morlino has been vigilant in following the U.S. Catholic Bishops’ Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People issued in 2002. In that document, the bishops reaffirmed the obligation of all involved with the Church to “protect young people and to prevent sexual abuse” since this “flows from the mission and example given to us by Jesus Christ himself.”

Bishop Morlino has set a great example for us to continue pro-life work

To the editor:

More than 20 years ago, my new friend at our parish would take time to explain the Catholic Church’s teachings on pro-life to me. That led to meeting the pro-life prayer warriors outside the Madison Abortion Clinic across from St. Raphael Cathedral in Madison.

We were rejecting the politically correct mantra that promiscuity, contraception, and abortion are good for us. We were praying and witnessing for God’s plan for marriage and family.
