Catholic health care professionals invited to White Mass

MADISON — The Catholic Medical Guild of the Diocese of Madison will be sponsoring the White Mass, celebrated by Bishop Robert C. Morlino, on Sunday, April 10, at 11 a.m., at St. Patrick Church, 404 E. Main St., Madison.

A White Mass, named by the color worn by those in healing professions, traditionally invokes God’s blessing upon patients, doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.

The Mass will be followed by a lunch reception and a presentation by Dr. Frank Smith, a urologist at the Wilkinson Medical Center in Hartland.

Recognizing the ‘glance’ of Jesus

This column is the bishop’s communication with the faithful of the Diocese of Madison. Any wider circulation reaches beyond the intention of the bishop.

Dear Friends,

As I write down a few thoughts here, we are entering — with heavy hearts — into the great and holy week during which we accompany Jesus in His terrible suffering and death.

As we go through Holy Week we shall hear a great many words — from the beautiful language of the sacred liturgies, to the readings themselves — including the telling of the Passion story, and of course, the many readings of the Easter Vigil.

From “Hosanna” to “Alleluia,” we will hear told, and even witness represented, the story of our own salvation.

Let there be gratitude — and joy!

Dear Friends,

This past Sunday’s Gospel featured a story that we all know well. The minute the “Story of the Prodigal Son” begins, we can say, “Well, I know how this ends,” and instead of paying attention, our minds might wander to one of a thousand different things.

It’s an understandable temptation, but I hope you didn’t do that, because every time we hear that familiar reading, it should be something that hits us very concretely and powerfully, because it turns out to be about you and me. It turns out that the Lord wants to say something to you and me about that reading and through that reading each time, that He has never said before.

The fifth in a series by Fr. John Zuhlsdorf about the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite.

In this short series we are looking into what Bishop Robert C. Morlino is up to when you see reports that he has celebrated a “Pontifical Mass at the Throne in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite” (PMATTITEFOTRR).

So far, we’ve made distinctions about what the Roman Rite and the Extraordinary Form are, we’ve seen the different levels of solemnity with which Holy Mass can be offered in the older, traditional form, and we’ve touched one of the most obvious differences between how a bishop says Mass in the traditional Form and the Ordinary Form, that is, the additional vestments he uses and the different ministers he has to help him.

Objects kissed

Here is another thing which might make you scratch your head when you attend your first PMATTITEFOTRR.

In the older, traditional Form, when objects are handed to and taken from the priest celebrant or the bishop, they are kissed, along with Father’s hand. What’s up with that?

It’s a good question, given the fact that it is so out of keeping with the style of 99 precent of Masses you have seen in the last 50 years.

Reflecting upon Word of God and Natural Law

Dear Friends,

Prior to launching into a reflection upon our readings from this past Sunday, I find myself desiring to reflect for a moment upon the death of Justice Antonin Scalia, of our United States Supreme Court.

I only met Justice Scalia twice, very briefly, and so my reflections are not necessarily drawn from personal experience. But they are certainly from the reliable and personally related experience of his family and of friends, who were very close to the Justice.

Diocesan Choir presents Lessons and Carols

MADISON — The Madison Diocesan Choir gives a special gift to the Diocese of Madison each year during the holiday season.

The choir presented its annual Festival of Lessons and Carols on Sunday, Dec. 20, in the chapel of the Bishop O’Connor Catholic Center.

Bishop Robert C. Morlino presided at the service, which includes Scripture readings and hymns and songs celebrating the season.

Dr. Patrick Gorman directed the 66-voice choir composed of singers from throughout the diocese.

Enhancing Lessons and Carols this year was the stirring music provided by the St. Raphael Brass Quintet and timpani. Members of the quintet include Robert Rohlfing and Jessica Jensen, trumpet; Matthew Beecher, horn; Brian Whitty, trombone; and David Spies, tuba. Joe Bernstein performed on the timpani.

Glenn Schuster, assistant director of the choir, provided piano accompaniment.
