Volunteers make difference for Six Rivers Food Pantry

CASSVILLE — In April 2019, Catholic Charities opened the Six Rivers Food Pantry in Cassville, Wis., in partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank and the Southwest Community Action Program.

Located along the Mississippi River, the food pantry serves Cassville and the neighboring communities of southwest Grant County, including Potosi, Cuba City, and Lancaster.

Hope Haven prepares for new facility

MADISON — In February 2020, Catholic Charities will be opening a new, state-of-the-art Hope Haven facility on the former grounds of the Chris Farley House, a 15-bed facility once located on Olin Ave., off Park St.

This modern facility will allow Hope Haven to meet the demand for affordable, individualized residential treatment due to the opioid epidemic and increased alcohol consumption.

Why we should support Catholic Charities

When I started working for the Catholic Herald, we shared offices with Catholic Charities (then called Catholic Social Service) in the St. Patrick Parish rectory building in downtown Madison.

Of course, I quickly became acquainted with the work of Catholic Charities. I even helped out by holding babies when they needed some extra arms for a pending adoption. One of the foster mothers used to dress the babies in cute clothes, some of them seasonal. I still remember a baby dressed in a tiny witch costume.

Over the years, Catholic Charities has provided compassionate, caring services to help the poor and vulnerable in our communities in the 11-county Diocese of Madison area.

Let’s recover a sense of compassion

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines compassion as a “sympathetic consciousness of others’ distress together with a desire to alleviate it.”

Perhaps it’s the constant news of disasters deluging us these days, but it seems as if many people have lost a sense of compassion. We’ve almost become numb to the suffering of others, whether it be from mass shootings, natural disasters, immigrants’ distress, or wars.

Catholic Charities holds Faith in Action Celebration

MIDDLETON — Catholic Charities (CC) in the Diocese of Madison held its 23rd annual Faith in Action Celebration November 8 at the Madison Marriott West in Middleton.

Jackson Fonder, president and CEO of Catholic Charities, welcomed the guests, noting that this marks 23 years of recognizing community leaders and sharing stories of Catholic Charities’ clients and volunteers.

He thanked the Edgewood High School Jazz Band for providing music during the cocktail time and thanked the Edgewood High School Honor Society students for helping check coats and the volunteer greeters from St. Ambrose Academy.

Catholic Charities to distribute flood relief assistance in Sauk County

BARABOO — Catholic Charities Madison is continuing to financially assist recent flood impacted households in South Central Wisconsin.

On September 27, Catholic Charities distributed 101 gift cards to households in Dane County facing the challenges of recovery from August flooding. Residents of Cross Plains, Mazomanie, Black Earth, and Belleville were able to use the funds to defray their own personal expenses.
