Impact of Catholic schools felt by Miss America and many other faith-filled graduates

Editor's View by Mary C. Uhler

It was so nice to hear the new Miss America talking about the impact of her Catholic school education on her life and the development of her faith.

“My Catholic education has been so important in reach my goals. It gave me my foundation for my faith,” Laura Kaeppeler said in an interview with the Milwaukee Catholic Herald. “I praise God in how he’s rewarded me.”

Catholic schools: A+ for America

Editor's View by Mary C. Uhler

The United States of America owes a great debt of gratitude to Catholic schools. From the early days of our country, Catholic schools educated the immigrants in this land (along with even some of the Native Americans).

As our country became a nation, Catholic schools continued to provide an outstanding education in both faith and academics to all citizens. Catholic schools have a proud tradition which is carried on today.

Who has a vocation?

Cutting Edge by Sr. Margie Lavonis

During January, most dioceses in the United States celebrate National Vocation Awareness Week.

This is a good time to think about vocations and who has one. Who do you think has a vocation? If you answered that everyone has a vocation, you get an A.

Receiving our vocation

So often we hear people limiting the term “vocation” to the priesthood and religious life. I hear many people, especially parents with children in Catholic schools, complain that we just don’t have enough vocations, but in truth we each received a vocation when we were baptized.

Congratulations, graduates! Catholic schools have prepared you well

This is the season of graduations. Students, family members, friends, and teachers are celebrating graduation from pre-schools, grade schools, high schools, and colleges.

It’s a time of great joy mixed with some sadness, as students celebrate their accomplishments but also leave behind the familiar and venture into the unknown. Parents of high school graduates especially find themselves looking forward to their children growing into adults and possibly leaving home for college. Some parents may face the empty nest with trepidation — and others may high five their spouses!

Parish cooks up faith and family

MADISON — Erika Frederick never guessed the path to family and faith would be paved with peanut butter and marshmallows.

But when she capped her work on the Our Lady Queen of Peace cookbook with a cooking class for her kids and some of their friends, she found the connection. As the children dug in to mix and form “Crispy Cereal Roll-ups,” she saw them learning lessons of working as a team, sharing values, and building memories.

Princeton Catholic school pays tribute with a Night in New Orleans

PRINCETON — What does a Catholic school in the small town of Princeton, Wis., have in common with the large southern city of New Orleans, La.?

St. John the Baptist School in Princeton believes it shares with New Orleans “a great love for our way of life and a desire to preserve it for future generations,” says St. John School parent Mary Soda.

“St. John is a nurturing environment, based on Catholic values, respect for life, and serving others. We have small class sizes, high curriculum standards, and more spirit than you can pack into a Mardi Gras Parade,” she said.
