Alice Bannier, co-president of the St. Martin of Tours CCW, said all ages are invited to hear Dr. Taysheedra Noll speak on the Women’s Place and Resource Center in De Forest, a new nonprofit center that offers women services that will allow them to become assets to the community. To the editor:
I have seen a poster several different occasions over the years that says “I am a stranger and you welcomed me [signed] Jesus”, where the word stranger is crossed out and replaced by the word “immigrant.” As a Catholic, I strongly believe that this is what my faith calls me to do: welcome the stranger, help those in need, and treat all with dignity and respect.
Thus, I am heartbroken to see how our nation has been treating immigrants, more so with the recent ICE arrests here in Wisconsin and the Madison area. According to ICE, only half of those arrested in Wisconsin had a previous criminal conviction. The other half, we are criminalizing simply for being here from another country. This is not acceptable, Christian treatment of our fellow human beings.
Madison Catholic Woman’s Club holds Day of Christian Renewal
MADISON — The Madison Catholic Woman’s Club (MCWC) invites all women of the Diocese of Madison and their guests to join in a Day of Christian Renewal on Tuesday, Oct. 9, at St. Maria Goretti Church Parish Hall, 5313 Flad Ave., Madison.
Shirley Kelter, Catholic chaplain at UW Health University Hospital, will be the featured speaker. PLATTEVILLE — It’s not uncommon for people helping college-aged young adults to say, “Our goal is to have people find out who they are.”
When those words come from a property management president like Bill Levy from BMOC, Inc., you know there is something special he’s talking about.
The “something special” is Newman Heights, a recently opened 144-bed student housing complex near the University of Wisconsin (UW)-Platteville campus and adjacent to St. Augustine University Parish.
Need for housing
St. Augustine Parochial Administrator Fr. John Del Priore, SJS, said the project began after he talked with UW-Platteville students who expressed a “need for a place they felt safe, a place they could flourish as Catholic students.”
He said they weren’t “comfortable” in other housing options they had on or near campus.
The eventual plan was to buy four houses that were on the same block as St. Augustine Church and then raze them, making way for a new student housing complex.
Tri North Builders in Fitchburg was contracted to design the building, made of stone, “done in a Gothic style,” said Architect Steve Harms.
“When you see it, it’s like wow,” Harms added.
Levy said a sense of “freedom” would exist at Newman Heights.
“The beautiful thing is that freedom to be able to really kind of be who you are and feel like you have the freedom
to be who you are, and you’re not going to be judged,” he said.

In the first place, I would like to affirm my solidarity with Cardinal DiNardo and his statement on behalf of the USCCB, particularly in two respects: 1) In his statement, Cardinal DiNardo indicates that the recent letter of Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, former Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, “brings particular focus and urgency” to the examination by the USCCB of the grave moral failings of bishops. “The questions raised,” Card. DiNardo says, “deserve answers that are conclusive and based on evidence. Without those answers, innocent men may be tainted by false accusations and the guilty may be left to repeat the sins of the past.” 2) And, Card. DiNardo continues, “we renew our fraternal affection for the Holy Father in these difficult days.”
With those convictions and sentiments, I find myself completely in solidarity.

Madison Catholic Woman’s Club getting ready for Benefit Dessert Party and Fashion Show
MADISON — The Madison Catholic Woman’s Club will host its annual Benefit Dessert Party and Fashion Show by Chico’s with the theme “Autumn All Around” on Monday, Sept. 17.
This is the club’s major fund-raiser with proceeds going to charitable projects. All women of the Diocese of Madison and their guests are invited to join the club for dessert, fashions, raffle, and prizes at St. Peter Catholic Church Social Center, 5001 N. Sherman Ave., Madison.
Doors open at 11 a.m. for raffle and seating; dessert will be served at 11:30 a.m., followed at 12 noon by fashions from Chico’s in Greenway Station, Middleton.
