Lumen House project moves forward

MADISON — Msgr. Kevin Holmes, rector of the Cathedral Parish in Madison, publicly thanked Wisconsin State legislators late in June for acting to ensure the opportunity for faith-based housing for students attending University of Wisconsin-Madison becomes a reality beginning with the 2014 to 2015 school year.

Preserving tax-exemption

In a release dated June 21, Monsignor Holmes noted the Cathedral Parish’s tremendous appreciation for “the efforts of Assembly Speaker Robin Vos (R-Rochester), Rep. Travis Tranel (R-Cuba City), and Rep. Pat Strachota (R-West Bend) and Senate Majority Leader, Senator Scott Fitzgerald (R-Beaver Dam) for their role in including a matter important to the Cathedral Parish in the governor’s budget bill.

Support for ban on gender-based abortions

The Wisconsin Catholic Conference (WCC) joined other pro-life groups in voicing support for a bill before the Wisconsin Legislature to impose a civil penalty on doctors who knowingly perform sex-selective abortions.

Assembly Bill 217 (authored by Rep. Steve Kestell, R-Elkhart Lake) received a public hearing on May 29 before the state Assembly Committee on Health.

Sex-selective abortion

A sex-selective abortion is an abortion that is performed when the parent or parents of the unborn child abort because the baby is not of the desired sex. Most of the time, unborn girls are aborted because the parents wanted to have a son.

Bishops release revised end-of-life letter

MADISON — Wisconsin’s Catholic bishops have released the third edition of their pastoral letter on end-of-life health care decision-making and advance care planning, Now and at the Hour of Our Death.

The letter voices the bishops’ concern and compassion for those facing critical health care decisions, and shares a moral and ethical framework for making such decisions.

Popular document

“The conference issued the first edition of this pastoral statement in 2002. That edition and the second one issued in 2006 have proven to be our most frequently requested document,” explained Wisconsin Catholic Conference (WCC) Executive Director John Huebscher.

“In the seven years since the second edition, we have seen even greater interest in the moral questions surrounding death and dying. The bishops are resolved to keep responding to that interest. Reissuing the document is an effective way to do that.”

Red shoes, black shoes

Real Life Cathoic by Christopher Stefanick

Pope Francis’ choice of shoes is not just about his preference of accessories. It’s a statement about the direction he’ll be taking his papacy. There’s a powerful witness in that direction.

That said, lest we get the wrong message (and I think many are), this new direction should not be perceived as a condemnation of his predecessors, nor of the rich symbolism that has always surrounded the papacy.

Volunteers from parishes joining together in Feed My Sheep effort

MADISON — In 2012 several parishes banded together with the Catholic Multicultural Center, Kids Against Hunger, as well as the organization 6:8 Making Service Personal and made a plan.

The plan, called Feed My Sheep, was to invite people from local Catholic parishes to donate toward building 25,000 meals for people in need in the Madison area and throughout the world. Each meal only cost a quarter, yet 25,000 meals sounded like a lot of quarters . . . and it was.
