Gala for the Glen to be held May 19

BARABOO — Durward’s Glen Retreat Center will hold its 2017 Gala for the Glen on Friday, May 19, at the center’s Main Hall in rural Baraboo.

This year’s theme is “Tradition: Celebrating Our Heritage.” The night will include a special display of Bernard Durward’s “Mater Dolorosa” (Our Lady of Sorrows) painting.

The Gala for the Glen is one of the major fundraisers for Durward’s Glen. The Friends Group that purchased the property in 2011 to preserve these 37+ acres of natural and historic beauty has been working steadily to make improvements to the grounds and expand the programs offered for Catholic faith development and renewal, cultural arts, and environmental stewardship.

Jack and Jill went up the hill . . .

Fonder Ponders column by Jackson Fonder

Later this fall, Catholic Charities will open the new Homeless Day Resource Center in Madison.

We have a lot of plans for the center, but right now I’m asking for your help because we are missing something . . . the center needs a name! I’m asking all of you to help by participating in our naming campaign!

Please give it some real thought. We need a good, strong, meaningful name that will stand the test of time.

Well-ordered soul lives with Christ at its center

The massive rose windows of the medieval Gothic cathedrals were not only marvels of engineering and artistry; they were also symbols of the well-ordered soul.

The pilgrim coming to the cathedral for spiritual enlightenment would be encouraged to meditate upon the rose of light and color in order to be drawn into mystical conformity with it.

Music & Memory spark happy memories for people with dementia

MADISON — Whether in the car, at work, at home, on a workout, or in church, music plays a huge role in every day life.

The tones, sounds, melodies, and lyrics people hear and enjoy often stay with them as they get older.

A recently developed program at the Catholic Charities Adult Day Center (ADC) in Madison helps participants get through parts of their days with the help of music.

The program is called Music & Memory.

It aims to bring personalized music into the lives of the elderly or infirm through digital music technology, vastly improving their quality of life.

It is geared toward helping people with dementia, such as Alzheimer’s or frontal-temporal dementia.

Certified facility

The ADC is a certified Music & Memory facility.

While most of the participants are elderly, anyone who uses the services of the center — and suffers from dementia — could take advantage of the program.

ADC staff took part in a training webinar after becoming aware of Music & Memory.

“We download music for the folks, specifically for them, and then when we need it during the day, we can use it for them,” said Lead Therapeutic Specialist Terri Ohmen.

“During the day, especially with the dementia participants, sometimes they escalate, they get anxious, waiting for their rides home . . . and when we see that, we can get out their personalized iPod, and we can go up to them and ask them if they would like to listen to some music,” said Ohmen.

Some iPod times are also held after lunchtime when participants need to wind down in the afternoon.
