Eyes opened to human struggles on mission trip

MADISON — The mission trip is a long-standing tradition, made available only to juniors at Edgewood High School. It is a service immersion experience.

Immersion experience

Part of the time students are involved in direct service. Part of the time students are learning about social justice issues such as poverty, homelessness, hunger, incarceration, racism, and immigration.

Part of the time students pray and reflect on their experiences. But, all of the time students are immersed in environments that open their eyes to the realities faced by so many marginalized people in our country.

Let’s respond to Pope Francis’ challenge!

Editor's View by Mary C. Uhler

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. I’m hoping this is true, because instead of writing a long “Editor’s View” this week, I’m publishing a picture. I hope it tells the story better than many words!

It was perhaps providential that I paid a visit to Niagara Falls close to the time when Pope Francis issued his encyclical, Laudato Si’: on Care for Our Common Home.

Fr. Robert Barron

A lion of the American Church

First in a series of reflections by Fr. Robert Barron on the life of Cardinal Francis George.

Cardinal Francis George, who died April 17 at the age of 78, was obviously a man of enormous accomplishment and influence.

He was a cardinal of the Roman Church, a past president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, the archbishop of one of the largest and most complicated archdioceses in the world, and the intellectual leader of the American Church.

A number of American bishops have told me that when Cardinal George spoke at the bishops’ meetings, the entire room would fall silent and everyone would listen.

Cardinal leaves legacy of faith, courage, wisdom

Editor's View by Mary C. Uhler

Cardinal Francis George’s episcopal motto was: Christo gloria in ecclesia (To Christ Be Glory in the Church).

Cardinal George dedicated his life to Christ and His Church. However, it wasn’t an easy life, which is probably why Cardinal George felt such compassion for other people.

At age 13, Cardinal George suffered from polio. He said the disease left him “a captive in my own body.”

Archbishop-designate Listecki: ‘an instrument of God’s presence’

ST. FRANCIS — His résumé might give the impression that Milwaukee’s 11th archbishop is driven: captain of his high school tennis team, basketball coach, degrees in civil and Church law, 24 years in the Army Reserve, moral theology professor, parish priest, pastor, and bishop. But he doesn’t view it that way.

“I don’t see myself as driven; I see myself as responding to needs. I’ve been the proverbial ‘If you want something done, ask a busy man.’ A busy man or woman will find time to get it accomplished,” Archbishop-designate Jerome E. Listecki told the Milwaukee Catholic Herald Saturday, Nov. 14, the day his appointment to Milwaukee was announced.
