Applications being accepted for Diocesan Choir Youth Pastoral Musician Scholarship

MADISON — Materials for this year’s Madison Diocesan Choir’s Youth Pastoral Musician Scholarship have been posted at https://madisondiocese.org/scholarship

The scholarship award is designed to support youth participation in music ministries within the diocese and its parishes.

The $500 scholarship is intended to assist young musicians to attend a summer music clinic. It is the hope that the improvement of their musical skills will benefit the parish at this time as well as the universal Church in years to come.

Lessons & Carols continues a tradition on Sunday, Dec. 22

MADISON — Continuing a tradition of 30-plus years, the Madison Diocesan Choir will present Lessons & Carols on Sunday, Dec. 22, at Holy Name Heights, accompanied by orchestra, harp, and organ in performing works of Fauré, Handel, and Mendelssohn, all celebrating the Savior’s birth.

Bishop Donald J. Hying will preside, his first Lessons & Carols as the new bishop of the Diocese of Madison. With Dr. Patrick Gorman directing the choir, the Advent service will begin at 4 p.m. in the Holy Name Oratory, 702 South High Point Rd.

Choir awards scholarships

MADISON — The Madison Diocesan Choir awarded five Youth Pastoral Musician Scholarship Awards (YPMSA), at the choir’s spring concert on May 17 in the chapel at Holy Name Heights in Madison.

Linda Galang, the choir’s scholarship committee chair, introduced two of the five winners who were able to attend the concert.

The scholarship initiative is for middle and high school students who are active in their parish music ministries. A successful applicant can receive $500 to attend an approved summer music clinic.

Diocesan Choir to perform with Ripon College singers

MADISON — The Madison Diocesan Choir will join the Ripon College Chamber Singers on Tuesday, March 19, at 7:30 p.m., in the Bishop O’Donnell Holy Name Memorial Chapel at Holy Name Heights, 702 S. High Point Rd.

The choir, directed by John C. Hughes, will conclude its annual tour and be joined by the Diocesan Choir for the first selection on the program.

The Chamber Singers will then perform a variety of unaccompanied choral works.

Diocesan Choir to sing in Baraboo

BARABOO — The Madison Diocesan Choir will join with the St. Joseph Choir to provide the music ministry for Mass on Saturday evening, Oct. 27, at 4 p.m. The church is located at 300 2nd St. in Baraboo. All are invited.

The Diocesan Choir has more than 60 singers this year. The choir sings at parishes around the diocese and at many diocesan Masses (such as Chrism Mass and ordinations).

Diocesan Choir presents its first Youth Pastoral Musician Scholarship Awards

MADISON — In the first year of a promising initiative, the Madison Diocesan Choir presented Youth Pastoral Musician Scholarship Awards to four students, double the number anticipated, thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor.

The scholarship winners are Laura Hinterberg, St. Maria Goretti Parish, Madison; Mary Hsu, Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish, Madison; Elizabeth TenBarge, St. Thomas Parish, Poynette, and Elizabeth White, St. Patrick Parish, Cottage Grove.

Trumpet will shine at Lessons and Carols

MADISON — With a trumpet solo as pure and melodic as it is glorious, the Madison Diocesan Choir will herald the birth of Christ in a Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, featuring brass quintet and timpani, this Sunday, Dec. 20, at the Bishop O’Connor Catholic Pastoral Center.

Dr. Patrick Gorman, Diocesan Choir director for nearly 25 years, has had harp, strings, and woodwinds accompany the choir with organist Glenn Schuster for the Advent service, a longstanding tradition of the choir.
