St. Cecilia Parish celebrates Advent with new Three Kings Christmas Market, tree lighting, and concert

St. Cecilia Parish in Wisconsin Dells will celebrate the start of the Advent season with a two-day event, featuring its second annual tree lighting and concert followed by a newly created old-world holiday market, Three Kings Christmas Market, the first weekend of December.

Woman’s Club opens hearts to children in need

MADISON — The Madison Catholic Woman’s Club (MCWC) opens their hearts to children at their annual Christmas luncheon by bringing gifts of toys and clothing to benefit the St. Vincent de Paul Little Drummer program.

This year’s luncheon on Tuesday, Dec. 11, will be held at Nakoma Golf Club, 4145 Country Club Rd., at 12 noon.

Apostolate plans Advent/Christmas Celebration

MONROE — The Apostolate for Persons with Disabilities-Diocese of Madison will hold its annual Advent/Christmas Celebration on Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Monroe High School gymnasium.

Bishop Robert C. Morlino will preside at the Mass opening the day at 10:30 a.m. The Madison Diocesan Choir will lead the singing. Lunch and appearance by Santa Claus will also be featured.

ASHTON — St. Peter Parish is again participating in the Box of Joy program.

This is an annual Christmas gift ministry organized by local Catholic schools, parishes, and groups across the United States and facilitated by Cross Catholic Outreach.

Spreading Christmas joy

Box of Joy provides teachers, parish leaders, and other Catholic groups a unique opportunity for students, parishioners, and group members to participate in a simple and tangible service experience that has both a material and spiritual impact on the poorest of the poor in developing countries.

Why Mary and peace go together

Just before Christmas, we learned of more violence in the world. In Berlin, Germany, a truck drove into a crowd of holiday shoppers at a Christmas market, killing at least 12 people and injuring as many as 50.

This attack came just hours after the assassination of the Russian ambassador to Turkey. The gunman was identified as a Turkish police officer who yelled, “Don’t forget Aleppo. Don’t forget Syria,” after he shot Andrei G. Karlov in the back.

May Christmas bring us closer to peace

Jim Mahoney, a Marine sergeant, was married shortly before going overseas in World War II. He and his wife never had the chance to celebrate Christmas together.

He returned from the Pacific in December of 1945, hoping and praying that he would make it home in time to be with his wife for Christmas so he could surprise her with a special Christmas gift.

A special gift

He flew into New York City on Christmas Eve after the stores were closed. As he rode in a cab, he noticed a drugstore that was still open. He stopped the cab and made a purchase.
