Mass to be celebrated at historic St. Philip Church

HIGHLAND — In honor of the Feast of St. Philip, Fr. Jim Murphy has scheduled a Mass on Sunday, May 7, at 1 p.m. in the historic 1888 St. Philip Church.

During the Mass, the many supporters who have died will be remembered. Prayers of thanksgiving will be offered for all volunteers whose work contributes to the preservation of the church.

There will be a light potluck luncheon in the lower level after the Mass; congregants are asked to bring snacks, beverages, and desserts to share.

‘Mass Mob’ on Palm Sunday in Princeton

PRINCETON — St. John Catholic Church is celebrating its fourth annual Mass Mob on Palm Sunday, April 9, at the 10:30 a.m. Mass. The parish asks parishioners and frequent guests to help fill the church.

This is an excellent way of fulfilling Pope Francis’ desire for us to bring others to Christ. You can fulfill his wishes by inviting others, especially those who have not been attending Mass on a frequent basis, through letters, emails, Facebook, and Twitter.

On ‘owning’ the Church

The question of “who owns the Church” has had a stormy history in Catholic America, although the terms of reference have changed considerably over time.

In the 19th century, “lay trusteeism” — lay boards that owned parish property and sometimes claimed authority over the appointment and dismissal of pastors — was a major headache for the U.S. bishops.

Today, the question is more likely to arise from the wetlands of psychobabble; thus one Midwestern diocesan chancellor recently spoke about a diocesan “needs assessment” that “can give ownership to the people,” presumably of their lives as Catholics.

Eucharistic Day at Sacred Hearts Parish, Sun Prairie

SUN PRAIRIE — St. Teresa of Avila once heard someone say, “If only I had lived at the time of Jesus . . . If only I had seen Jesus . . . If only I had talked with Jesus . . .”

St. Teresa replied, “But do we not have in the Eucharist the living, true, and real Jesus present before us? Why look for more?”

Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Parish, 221 Columbus St., will hold its annual Eucharistic Day, Sunday, March 26.

Consider taking off coat when attending Mass

Dear fellow Catholics:

Consider taking off your coat when attending Mass. We are, after all, visiting the home of our Father and partaking in a meal with Him.

Clearing up misconceptions about forgiving

Robert Enright

Second in a series of seven articles on forgiveness.

Lent is a time of seeking forgiveness for sins and then practicing forgiveness toward those who have been unfair to us.

When we forgive, we give the gift of goodness to those who have not been good to us. As we are forgiven, we forgive, as the Catholic Church teaches (Catechism of the Catholic Church, par. 2838).

Sometimes, when people reflect on this link between being forgiven in the Sacrament of Penance and then forgiving others, there may be some apprehension in now extending that forgiveness to those who have been hurtful.
