Take action to protect dreamers

The  official name for individuals who meet the general requirements of the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act is DREAMers.

However, I think we could call them dreamers in the regular sense, because they are young people who dream of staying in the United States and becoming citizens of this country.

In 2012, a policy called the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program — popularly known as DACA — was implemented under the Obama administration. It gave young people — mostly 15 to 30 years of age — a temporary reprieve from deportation and the authorization to be employed in our country.

Pray and work for liberty and justice for all

Now that the November election is over, the work has only just begun — not only by those we elected, but by all of us citizens.

Whether we liked the outcomes or not, we still have to make our views known to our elected officials. If they made promises we like, we have to hold them to those promises. If we didn’t like what they had to say, we have to make sure they hear our opinions.

In Wisconsin, voting is a basic right enshrined in our state constitution. Voting is also a solemn obligation of all faithful citizens charged with a responsibility for the affairs of the community.

There are several powerful reasons for all of us to take the trouble to vote in the coming election.

For one thing, the vote is a powerful weapon for those who use it, and too many of us don’t bother to vote.

Now that the governor has presented his state budget to the Legislature, fiscal issues and spending priorities will dominate the legislative agenda for the next several months.

First, the Joint Committee on Finance will hold hearings on the proposals. Then some of the standing committees may hold “subject matter” hearings on aspects of the budget related to their areas of expertise.
