Let your voice be heard: Contact your elected officials on important issues

Being an active citizen doesn’t end with voting. If we are truly concerned about the direction our country is taking at the state and federal levels, we should keep in touch with our elected officials between elections.

John Huebscher of the Wisconsin Catholic Conference wrote a recent “Eye on the Capitol” column encouraging state citizens to give attend and/or give testimony at budget hearings held at our state Capitol.

On the national level, there are important issues being addressed, too. Sometimes it may seem that the opinion of one person doesn’t matter. However, I think it is important to make sure our elected officials know where we stand. Perhaps one person can make a difference. Or one person combined with many others with the same opinion can change a senator’s or congressional representative’s mind.

Take action to support conscience rights

A new federal mandate on health care coverage is posing a threat to the religious freedom of  Church-affiliated employers, including Catholic hospitals, universities, and charitable institutions.

Health insurance plans are being required to provide reproductive services for women including contraceptives and sterilization procedures, as well as for drugs that may cause an abortion both before and after implantation.

Urge representatives to vote against Senate bill

To the editor:

You are urgently needed to contact Representative Ron Kind or Tammy Baldwin and urge them to vote against H.R. 3590, the Senate version of health care reform.  This bill contains a huge expansion of abortion by using taxpayer funds to pay for health care premium subsidies and to pay for abortions in Community Health Centers.

In addition, there are no adequate conscience protections for health care professionals and facilities that do not want to participate in abortions.

Senate version of health care bill expands taxpayer funding of abortion

The Senate version of Obamacare, despite rhetoric to the contrary,would greatly expand the federal government’s role in abortion coverage and even direct payment for abortions at taxpayer expense.
