Jackie and the priest in conversation

Somehow I managed to miss the film Jackie during the Christmas season, but I watched it, twice, on recent long flights to and from the east coast.

Like many others, I was struck by its moody, more “European” style, the high quality of the acting, especially on the part of Natalie Portman, and its historical verisimilitude, but what particularly impressed (and surprised) me were the scenes between Mrs. Kennedy and a sympathetic priest.

Checking on parents during extended holiday visit

Q My husband and I are traveling to his parents’ home for the Christmas holiday. We are not sure what to expect. His parents are both in their mid-80s and we have not seen them for several months as we live on the East Coast.

My husband is an only child so we rely mostly on phone calls with his parents to inform us of their well-being. Each time we speak they assure us they are fine but it seems that our conversations have become less detailed. We have also noticed that they often repeat the same information during our conversations.

MADISON — There will be a community conversation about restorative justice practices in Dane County on Tuesday, May 17, at the Urban League of Greater Madison, 2222 S Park Street, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The panel will include Jonathon Scharrer, director of the Restorative Justice Project at the UW Law School Frank J Remington Center, Ron Johnson, Coordinator, Dane County Community Restorative Court, Ismael Ozanne, Dane County District Attorney, Sheila Stubbs, Dane County Board of Supervisors, and Chief David Raasch, former chief judge of the Mohican Nation Tribal Court.

Conversation planned on encyclical

MADISON — A conversation on Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’: On Care of Our Common Home and sustainable agriculture in Wisconsin will be held Sunday, Sept. 27, from 1:30 to 6 p.m. in Anderson Auditorium in Predolin Hall at Edgewood College.

Panelists will include environmentalist Calvin DeWitt , Sr. Miriam Brown, Eric Anglada of the New Hope Catholic Worker Farm, and Edgewood economics professor Kevin Biller. The speakers will lead break-out sessions after the panel concludes.
