Mothers are often under-appreciated

On January 7, 2015, during his general audience, Pope Francis lamented how mothers are often under-appreciated.

The pope stated, “To be a mother is a great treasure. Mothers, in their unconditional, sacrificial love for their children, are the antidote to individualism. They are the greatest enemies against war.”

From all around Dane County, people submitted ideas for what to name the center that is under construction in Madison at 615 E. Washington Ave.

Schools, faith centers, clubs, organizations, and individuals submitted ideas for a name. Those who would be using the center were included as well. Bethel Lutheran Church provided its homeless guests with an opportunity to submit ideas offline.

Let’s make every day an Earth Day

We in Wisconsin should especially appreciate Earth Day because it was started by Gaylord Nelson when he was a U.S. senator from Wisconsin.

On April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans crowded streets, parks, and auditoriums to celebrate the first Earth Day. They called for a healthy, sustainable environment. Earth Day’s time had come.

Jack and Jill went up the hill . . .

Fonder Ponders column by Jackson Fonder

Later this fall, Catholic Charities will open the new Homeless Day Resource Center in Madison.

We have a lot of plans for the center, but right now I’m asking for your help because we are missing something . . . the center needs a name! I’m asking all of you to help by participating in our naming campaign!

Please give it some real thought. We need a good, strong, meaningful name that will stand the test of time.

Eucharistic Day at Sacred Hearts Parish, Sun Prairie

SUN PRAIRIE — St. Teresa of Avila once heard someone say, “If only I had lived at the time of Jesus . . . If only I had seen Jesus . . . If only I had talked with Jesus . . .”

St. Teresa replied, “But do we not have in the Eucharist the living, true, and real Jesus present before us? Why look for more?”

Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Parish, 221 Columbus St., will hold its annual Eucharistic Day, Sunday, March 26.

Bishop grants dispensation from abstinence on St. Patrick’s Day

MADISON — The bishops of Wisconsin determined together that since St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Friday this year (March 17), it would be appropriate to dispense the faithful from the obligation of abstinence from eating meat that day.

Since this must be done by each bishop in his own diocese, Bishop Robert C. Morlino has issued a “Rescript Granting Dispensation” for the “faithful who reside in the Diocese of Madison, as well as anyone actually present in the Diocese of Madison” on March 17, 2017.

Music & Memory spark happy memories for people with dementia

MADISON — Whether in the car, at work, at home, on a workout, or in church, music plays a huge role in every day life.

The tones, sounds, melodies, and lyrics people hear and enjoy often stay with them as they get older.

A recently developed program at the Catholic Charities Adult Day Center (ADC) in Madison helps participants get through parts of their days with the help of music.

The program is called Music & Memory.

It aims to bring personalized music into the lives of the elderly or infirm through digital music technology, vastly improving their quality of life.

It is geared toward helping people with dementia, such as Alzheimer’s or frontal-temporal dementia.

Certified facility

The ADC is a certified Music & Memory facility.

While most of the participants are elderly, anyone who uses the services of the center — and suffers from dementia — could take advantage of the program.

ADC staff took part in a training webinar after becoming aware of Music & Memory.

“We download music for the folks, specifically for them, and then when we need it during the day, we can use it for them,” said Lead Therapeutic Specialist Terri Ohmen.

“During the day, especially with the dementia participants, sometimes they escalate, they get anxious, waiting for their rides home . . . and when we see that, we can get out their personalized iPod, and we can go up to them and ask them if they would like to listen to some music,” said Ohmen.

Some iPod times are also held after lunchtime when participants need to wind down in the afternoon.
