St. Joseph Parish and School in Fort Atkinson to host 40 Hours Devotion

FORT ATKINSON — St. Joseph Parish and School will host a 40 Hours Devotion.

This devotion dates back and was developed during the Middle Ages, after the Feast of Corpus Christi was extended to the Universal Church.

Corpus Christi is known for its street processions with the Blessed Sacrament, even in our own time. St. Philip Neri and St. Ignatius adopted the 40 Hours Devotion in reparation for sin, which brought many blessings and conversions.

Devotion to Mary continues

Editor's View by Mary C. Uhler

When I was growing up in La Crosse, I used to attend Our Mother of Perpetual Help novenas every Tuesday evening with my family at Blessed Sacrament Parish.

I liked attending the novenas, but I never learned much about this Marian devotion. It wasn’t until recently that I found out how it developed.

I discovered that the icon of the Blessed Mother with her divine son (pictured here) has helped provide strength, comfort, and even miracles to the faithful for centuries.

It seems appropriate during May — the month dedicated to Mary — that we learn more about Our Mother of Perpetual Help.

Durward’s Glen to begin First Saturdays Devotion

BARABOO — Durward’s Glen, W11876 McLeish Rd., is hosting Holy Mass every first Saturday of the month throughout 2014. The First Saturdays Devotion is a Catholic practice that has been requested by the Virgin Mary in several apparitions, notably Our Lady of Fátima and the subsequent Pontevedra apparitions.

This devotion and the Marian apparitions have been officially embraced by the Roman Catholic Church as worthy private devotions but are not obligatory.

Faith is alive during Lent on UW-Madison campus

MADISON — College students are known for “pulling an all-nighter” to stay up through the night writing a paper or studying for an exam.

For Audrey Hilts, a sophomore at UW-Madison and student leader at St. Paul Catholic Center, her first all-nighter last year was a little different.

“The night before Ash Wednesday, St. Paul’s offered all-night perpetual Eucharistic Adoration — praying with the Blessed Sacrament in the middle of the night was such a powerful way to begin Lent!”

Mary as ‘the loosener of knots’

Dear Friends,

Even as we come upon the last days and hours of this month of October, I cannot fail to take a few moments to reflect upon the woman we’ve been honoring in a special way — Mary, the mother of Jesus, and our mother.

Growing closer to the Mother of God during May

Our Lady is for us the ultimate example of somebody adhering herself fully to God’s will. She was surely scared and unsure of what might come next, but unknowingly said yes to God’s will, that she would bear His son.

We can use this as a model for our relationship with God, and invoke Mary’s kind whispers in Jesus’ ear to help us through a hard time and grow closer to Jesus.

Devotion through the Rosary

Obviously, a powerful devotion to Our Lady, the Rosary is a great way to strengthen your relationship with God’s mother. While many people my own age think of the Rosary as a chore to pray with family or a boring task, sometimes its true potential is never quite realized.

Praying Rosary helps us imitate Mary, do God’s will

To the editor:

October is the month of the Rosary. On October 7, 1571, Catholic forces defeated the Turks in the Battle of Lepanto. Thousands of Catholics prayed the Rosary and invoked Mary’s intercession and helped to achieve this important victory. In gratitude, Pope Pius V established the feast which became the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, which we celebrate on October 7.
