Some initial comments on Amoris Laetitia

Dear Friends,

There is a great deal to consider and to speak of this week. However, I want first to comment on the readings of this past weekend and specifically upon the Second Reading (Rev 5:11-14), which provide us with a beautiful image of heaven.

In that reading we hear of the vision that St. John had of all creation singing eternally: “To the one who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor, glory and might, forever and ever!” A beautiful, glorious hymn of praise for all eternity is one very reliable picture of what heaven is like.

St. Paul’s Spring Wine Fest: Toasting new era of campus ministry

MADISON — If anyone has taken a stroll down State St. in the past two months, one will notice a vast difference at 723 State St. The old St. Paul University Catholic Center has been dismantled to make way for the construction of the larger, new St. Paul’s Church and Student Center!

While each year has brought changes and new faces to the primarily student-based center, the heart of the mission remains consistent: providing frequent sacraments and many programs designed to engage the hearts and minds of students, build authentic community, and foster a friendship with Christ that provides a foundation for a lifetime of discipleship.

Catholic health care professionals invited to White Mass

MADISON — The Catholic Medical Guild of the Diocese of Madison will be sponsoring the White Mass, celebrated by Bishop Robert C. Morlino, on Sunday, April 10, at 11 a.m., at St. Patrick Church, 404 E. Main St., Madison.

A White Mass, named by the color worn by those in healing professions, traditionally invokes God’s blessing upon patients, doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.

The Mass will be followed by a lunch reception and a presentation by Dr. Frank Smith, a urologist at the Wilkinson Medical Center in Hartland.

Who will fill these shoes?

Fr. Greg Ihm

“The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; pray therefore the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”

There is a story that comes out of the Archdiocese of Chicago that asks a profound question. It is a story of a monsignor.

At his last weekend before retirement, he placed his shoes at the foot of the altar and after a long pause looked out and asked: “Who is going to fill these shoes now?”

This is a question that has been placed before us as a diocese as we have lost both Msgr. Monte Robinson and Fr. Larry Bowens within a week of each other.

In the past three years, we have also lost Fr. John Auby, Fr. Michael Richel, and Msgr. Felix Oehrlein, who were pastors at the time of their death.

2016 Annual Catholic Appeal: ‘Contemplating the Face of God’s Mercy’

annual catholic appeal

MADISON — While in the midst of this Year of Mercy, we are truly given a wonderful opportunity to “Contemplate the Face of God’s Mercy” and reflect upon the ways that God’s mercy will lead us to greater works of mercy in our families, parishes, communities, and throughout the diocese.

We can tangibly contemplate and live out God’s mercy through both the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. One way to support many of those works is through giving to the Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA).

Each year, for the ACA, each parishioner in the Diocese of Madison is asked to prayerfully consider what they are able to give back to the Church. Your pledge to the ACA goes to support many missions and works of mercy throughout the diocese. Some of these include:

• Support Services and Teacher Training in Catholic Schools — Do you know any children that attend a Catholic school in the diocese? The

ACA funds trainings for principals to assure schools are compliant with state and federal laws and accreditations and best practices. It also supports mentorship training, renewing of teachers licenses and trainings for diocesan catholic school teachers.

Wisconsin’s Into the Breach Tour empowers men

This past September 29, on the Feast of St. Michael the Archangel, Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted of the Diocese of Phoenix, Ariz., promulgated an Apostolic Exhortation calling men to step “Into the Breach.” Bishop Olmsted began his exhortation:

“I begin this letter with a clarion call and clear charge to you, my sons and brothers in Christ: Men, do not hesitate to engage in the battle that is raging around you, the battle that is wounding our children and families, the battle that is distorting the dignity of both women and men.
