‘If I can dream of a better land . . .’

kevin-editorial

Recently, I rewatched the HBO documentary Elvis Presley: The Searcher.

The more than three-and-half hour miniseries looks at the life and career of the affectionately-labeled “King of Rock and Roll”.

In the film, his story is bookended and told within the context of his 1968 “comeback special” that aired in December of that year.

At the conclusion of that special, Mr. Presley sings an emotional version of the song “If I Can Dream.”

Take action to protect dreamers

The  official name for individuals who meet the general requirements of the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act is DREAMers.

However, I think we could call them dreamers in the regular sense, because they are young people who dream of staying in the United States and becoming citizens of this country.

In 2012, a policy called the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program — popularly known as DACA — was implemented under the Obama administration. It gave young people — mostly 15 to 30 years of age — a temporary reprieve from deportation and the authorization to be employed in our country.

Continuing to follow Dr. King’s dream

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is an American federal holiday that marks the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. It is observed on the third Monday of January, which is around Dr. King’s birthday, January 15. This year it is observed on January 18.

In his speech to Congress in September of 2015, Pope Francis lifted up four Americans who worked for social justice. They were two non-Catholics, Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King, Jr., and two Catholics, Dorothy Day and Thomas Merton. Crux columnist John L. Allen Jr. called them the pope’s “Fantastic Four” who stood up for the poor.

Daniel and the great unveiling

Toward the end of the liturgical year, we Catholics hear at Mass from the mysterious, often confounding, and utterly fascinating Book of Daniel.

Recent scholarship has demonstrated that the Book of Daniel had an extraordinarily powerful influence on the first Christians, providing them a most important template for understanding the significance of Jesus.

Daniel is, of course, an example of apocalyptic literature, which in the common understanding means that it has to do with the end of the world.

Teens encouraged to live ‘God’s dream’

MIDDLETON — The sights and sounds of “panda ball” and mozzarella sticks fresh out of the oven meant it was time to start another year of Cardinal Virtue.

Cardinal Virtue is a Catholic youth apostolate that aims to engage high school students in the Middleton and Cross Plains areas.

The group recently held its kick-off event at St. Bernard Church in Middleton.
