Edgewood student wins city spelling bee

MADISON — After more than 300 words, defending champion, Martius Bautista, a fifth grader at Edgewood Campus School, Madison, won the 2015 All-City Spelling Bee by outspelling 46 other spellers.

The event was held at the Mitby Theater on the Madison College campus.

The first word in the final round was “abhorrently,” which Bautista spelled correctly, and he went on to win the All-City Spelling Bee by spelling “lipogram.”

Edgewood High School peer ministers lead retreat

MADISON — As part of Catholic Schools Week, students in the Peer Ministry class at Edgewood High School had a chance to give back and help younger students grow in their faith.

The Peer Ministry class challenges students to develop their personal faith and leadership potential. Students plan and lead liturgies and prayer services throughout the semester along with participating and leading retreats and service programs.

Edgewood students receive awards at Martin Luther King, Jr., breakfast

MADISON — On January 18, Edgewood High School (EHS) once again hosted the Urban League of Greater Madison as they celebrated the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., with an Outstanding Young Person Breakfast.

This breakfast attracted more than 900 youth, families, and community leaders.

Edgewood College president to be inaugurated

MADISON — Dr. Scott Flanagan officially becomes the seventh president of Edgewood College at the inauguration ceremony at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24, in the Todd Wehr Edgedome on campus.

The ceremony marks the close of a weeklong celebration of the new president who took over leadership of the college on August 1.

The inauguration features an academic procession of dignitaries representing colleges and universities from Wisconsin and beyond.

Candidates’ Forum at Edgewood College

MADISON — The Wisconsin NAACP Conference of Branches and the NAACP of Dane County invite the public to attend a moderated Candidates’ Forum.

Candidates invited include those for governor of Wisconsin, lieutenant governor, attorney general, secretary of state, state treasurer, Wisconsin Senate District 13, and Wisconsin Assembly Districts 37, 79, and 81.

Edgewood’s coach combines faith with football

MADISON — For Edgewood High School football coach Al Minnaert, the start of his 23rd season is another opportunity to go beyond teaching Xs and Os, it’s a chance to teach young men about relationships.

“You’ll remember wins and losses, close games, and some of those things, but the real part that matters and that they get the most out of are the relationships they establish with their classmates, their teammates, and their coaches, and if it’s done the right way, even perhaps opposing players.”

Minnaert, like coach Bob Ladoucuer in the movie When the Games Stands Tall, is both football coach and religion teacher at Edgewood — teaching half of the freshman class each year.

Sister Helen Dailey, OP, dies

SINSINAWA — Sister Helen Dailey, OP, died July 4, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center, Dubuque, Iowa. Her religious name was Sr. Joeline. The funeral Mass will be held in Queen of the Rosary Chapel at Sinsinawa July 9, 2014, followed by burial of the cremains in the Motherhouse Cemetery.

Sr. Helen made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican Aug. 5, 1949, and her final profession Aug. 5, 1952. She taught elementary and middle school for 33 years and college for 14 years. Sr. Helen ministered as director of religious education for 12 years, seven of those while also serving as pastoral associate. She served in Illinois, Wisconsin, New Jersey, Nebraska, and Florida.

Edgewood Campus School’s EdgeTech team enters Technovation Challenge

MADISON — A team of five eighth grade girls from Edgewood Campus School (ECS) participated in the 2014 Technovation Challenge. Technovation is the world’s largest and longest-running tech competition for girls. There were 842 teams worldwide entered in the 2014 challenge.

In Technovation, teams of young women identify a problem, create an app to solve it, code the app, build a company to launch the app in the market, and pitch their plan to experts — all in 12 weeks. The 2014 challenge required teams to develop an app that solves a problem in their local community.

Edgewood College to hold annual ‘Family Science Night’

MADISON — The Sonderegger Science Center on the campus of Edgewood College will soon be filled with opportunities to explore science through hands-on activities for learners of all ages (but mostly for the younger ones).

Many exploration stations allow young minds to investigate a wide variety of physical phenomena, chemical craziness, and biological beauty.
