Coach Gard: Step up to help those in need

MADISON — Using a baseball analogy, University of Wisconsin Head Basketball Coach Greg Gard said, “We need to step up to the plate and help those around us.”

He gave this advice during a talk at the Society of St. Vincent de Paul’s Care Café, a community fundraising breakfast held May 5 at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison.

Vision and plans for St. Paul Catholic Center

MADISON — In recent months, Madison-area Catholics have heard of the new changes planned for St. Paul University Catholic Center on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus.

The proposed building project and program will have an important and lasting impact on many future generations of Catholic leaders in our city and state.

St. Paul’s invites and strongly encourages all Madison-area Catholics to attend an informational presentation, at which the community will hear the full vision and plans for the new St. Paul Catholic Center and Residential College.

As the campus ministry has grown and affected thousands of Catholic students and families, new areas of growth and development have occurred. Hear about the current campus ministry and the need for an expanded and upgraded physical space, as well as an exciting new program launching in summer 2011 in partnership with Edgewood College.

Students learn, fast, donate to Haiti relief

haiti relief contribution breakdownMADISON — Each week, St. Paul University Catholic Center on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus hosts a dinner to bring together the student community in a fun setting with the comfort of a family-style meal.

The dinner on February 4, however, had an additional intent — to learn a little more about Haitian culture through its cuisine, to understand the current situation in Haiti, and to contribute to the relief efforts there.

Diocese of Madison coordinating aid to Haiti

MADISON — Echoing the call made by Pope Benedict XVI, Bishop Robert C. Morlino has encouraged parishes and people in the 11 counties of the Madison Diocese to do all they could for the people currently suffering in Haiti. Regardless of the funds collected, the bishop has approved a disbursement of $25,000 to be sent immediately to Catholic Relief Services in advance of fundraising efforts.

The devastating earthquake, centered in Port-au-Prince, has left hundreds of thousands dead and has affected nearly everyone in the small island nation. In a letter to priests and faithful, Diocesan Vicar General, Msgr. James Bartylla, echoed Pope Benedict XVI’s assurance that “The Catholic Church will not fail to move immediately, through her charitable institutions, to meet the most immediate needs of the population.”

The Madison Diocese, which had already scheduled a special collection on January 16 and 17 to benefit the Church in Latin America and the Church’s evangelization and service efforts among Native American and African American communities in the United States, has encouraged all parishes to take up a special collection for the sole benefit of the people of Haiti, in the next two weeks.
