Sr. Miguel Hearty, OP, dies

SINSINAWA — Sr. Miguel Hearty, OP, died August 7, 2015, at St. Dominic Villa. The funeral Mass was held in Queen of the Rosary Chapel at Sinsinawa August 11, 2015, followed by burial in the motherhouse cemetery.

Sister Miguel made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican August 5, 1933, and her final profession August 5, 1936. She taught for 53 years, including at a preschool she founded for underserved minority children in Apalachicola, Fla.; served as principal for 12 years; and ministered as educational consultant for five years. Sister Miguel’s educational expertise was shared nationally while she served as editor of the Catholic youth publications Mine One Magazine, Mine Four Magazine, and Hi Mine Magazine at different times between 1948 and 1963. She served as consultant to 29 schools in 10 states in the congregation’s Southeast Province. At that time, it was becoming apparent that Sisters would no longer be capable of staffing the numbers of schools they had previously. The province team developed a system to evaluate a school’s current and future prospects in regards to Sister staff and school operations. The process helped parishes and lay people continue to operate their schools after the Sisters were no longer assigned there. Sister Miguel’s ministries were based in Illinois, the District of Columbia, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Florida.

End of life: Deserves as much attention as the beginning

Editor's View by Mary C. Uhler

As we conclude the month of October — designated as Respect Life Month — it seems appropriate to reflect on end-of-life issues.

Doesn’t it seem that our society today pays much more attention to the beginning of life than the end of it? We get excited about the birth of a baby. We have baby showers, spend time getting the nursery decorated, and send out birth announcements when the baby is born. We buy cards and gifts for the new child.

‘Vision’ becomes better with age

Grand Mom column by Audrey Mettel Fixmer

One of the benefits of aging is that our vision improves so much.

What? You say you have more trouble reading the fine print on prescription bottles? And you need stronger light bulbs and magnifying glasses?

Oh, sure, but that’s not the kind of vision I’m thinking about. I’m thinking of hindsight. You know, they always say that hindsight is 20-20.

So here’s what’s so great about it. We have perspective now. We can look back at the things that drove us crazy with worry, like a messy house when guests arrived. But now we know that it was never the picture-perfect house that mattered, but the warmth of our hospitality.

Funerals: Not a time for remorse but celebration

Grand Mom column by Audrey Mettel Fixmer

When I was a kid back in the 30s and 40s, Grandma often came for a visit, always dressed in black, and usually it was a funeral that brought her to town.

I thought that was so weird. Did she enjoy funerals? Was that the only thing on her social calendar?

Well, guess what? I’ve arrived at that age when I open the paper first to the obituary page. First I check out to see if there’s someone I know. Then, I average the ages to see how I’m doing.

On a good day I’m younger than any of them. On a bad day I’m older. Too often, it seems, I find a friend has passed and I feel a stab of pain for the spouse and I want to express my sympathy and attend the funeral.

Final salvation at last

When I recently attended the funeral of my dear friend Betty, it occurred to me that funerals are really good for us seniors. They remind us of our own mortality, of course.
