Health care should be considered a right

I disagree with the comments Senator Ron Johnson made in response to a question from a New Berlin High School student (September 28, 2017) as to whether health care was a right or a privilege.
The senator not only said that health care was not a right, but he indicated that food, shelter, and clothing also were not rights.
Sisters explore healthcare transfer to SSM Health
MADISON — The Congregation of Sisters of St. Agnes (CSA) and SSM Health have signed a letter of intent to transfer sponsorship of Agnesian HealthCare based in Fond du Lac and Monroe Clinic based in Monroe.
The parties will begin a due diligence process with the goal of integrating the hospitals and affiliate organizations within the SSM Health system.
As mission-driven organizations, SSM Health and CSA share a commitment to ensuring the long-term sustainability of Catholic healthcare and providing exceptional healthcare services to meet the needs of the patients and communities they serve across Wisconsin.
Please don’t weaken the safety net
Health care safety net providers are institutions that are critical in providing care and services in low-income, medically underserved, immigrant, and communities of color.
These institutions already serve a large percentage of patients who are underinsured or on Medicare. They have relied on help from the government. Yet, now Congress is considering changes to health care which could weaken that safety net.
New Catholic Charities Adult Day Center blessed
MADISON — A new era in caring for those with special needs and their caregivers has begun.
On April 26, staff members of the Catholic Charities Adult Day Center, Catholic Charities of Madison, and other guests were on hand as the new center was blessed and officially opened with a ceremonial ribbon cutting.
Catholic health care professionals invited to White Mass
MADISON — The Catholic Medical Guild of the Diocese of Madison will be sponsoring the White Mass, celebrated by Bishop Robert C. Morlino, on Sunday, April 10, at 11 a.m., at St. Patrick Church, 404 E. Main St., Madison.
A White Mass, named by the color worn by those in healing professions, traditionally invokes God’s blessing upon patients, doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
The Mass will be followed by a lunch reception and a presentation by Dr. Frank Smith, a urologist at the Wilkinson Medical Center in Hartland.
Health care law helps those with pre-existing conditions

In response to the letter concerning “big government” and the Affordable Care Act in the December 26 issue of the Catholic Herald, I would like to express support for the new health care law.
For decades, we, as a country, have let the insurance companies deny health care to those with pre-existing conditions.
Conscience rights: Urge Congress to protect religious liberty in health care
Over 56,000 people joined me in contacting their members of Congress about the importance of protecting conscience rights in health care. We were responding to an appeal from the National Committee for a Human Life Amendment (NCHLA).
The NCHLA is urging us to continue to fight for conscience protection under the Affordable Care Act, signed into law in 2010 and upheld by the Supreme Court in 2012.
Challenging provisions of Affordable Care Act
Catholic dioceses, as well as Catholic and other religious nonprofit organizations and businesses, have filed lawsuits challenging the mandate that is part of the Affordable Care Act.
Archbishop William E. Lori, chairman of the U.S. bishops’ Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty, said in a statement reported by Catholic News Service (CNS) that the goal of these litigants is “nothing less than securing the freedom of the Church to continue to obey the Lord’s command — and, in turn, to serve the common good — by providing charitable ministries in health care, education, and service to the poor, all without compromising Catholic beliefs.”
