Healthy eating for successful living

BELOIT — The Rock County Council on Aging is offering a six-week educational class on healthy eating for successful living.

The program is open to older adults interested in learning about nutrition and how lifestyle changes can promote better health through nutrition and exercise.

Participants will learn goal setting and brainstorming strategies to increase bone and heart healthy food choices.

Aging Conference offers advice for living healthier lives

Life expectancy has risen dramatically in the last two centuries. Trends now show that people are living longer and healthier lives. “People who turn 65 today have a lot of years ahead of them,” Dr. Dorothy Farrar Edwards told those attending the recent Catholic Charities Aging Conference held at the Bishop O’Connor Center.

Daughter is concerned about mom’s diet

Ask Jean by columnist Jean MuellerQ I am concerned about my mother who is in her late 70s. She lives alone and is quite independent. She recently started having some health problems related to high blood pressure, swelling, and fatigue.

The doctor placed her on some medication and is closely monitoring her for which I am thankful. Since I live in a different county, I am not able to be there as often as I would like but we talk frequently and she assures me that she is following the doctor’s advice.

My concern is related to her diet. She insists on eating the same foods every day, which consists of TV dinners, soup, and sandwiches.

I would like her to eat more nutritious foods that are lower in salt but since I am not there to help her prepare them, I don’t think I can be too critical of her intake.

Are there any healthier options or support for people in these situations? I know she will not want to make a big meal since she lives alone. (From a daughter in Kenosha)

Exercising isn’t just for the ‘young’ anymore

Grand Mom column by Audrey Mettel Fixmer

“If I knew then what I know now” is a common opener for us senior citizens.

It is especially appropriate for things involving health care . . . the benefits of regular exercise, for example.

Granted, our Mamas got lots of exercise hanging out laundry, the Papas didn’t have power lawn mowers, and the kids didn’t get rides to school. Everybody walked everywhere.

Playtex or Jack LaLanne?

I just wish I had heard about exercise during my childbearing years in the late 40s and early 50s.

I expected to get back into shape by pulling on a Playtex rubber girdle. (Oh, the memory of sweating through that one!)

Following the recipe for a good life

grand mom

During the holidays I love hearing from old friends, voices from my past; Charlotte, a “mother’s helper” who lived with us for her senior year of high school and now has grandchildren of her own; Tom and Betty, who taught with Bob in the ’50’s and shared our laughter and tears.

They were the short term relationships, the layers of love that add flavor and richness to our lives. The long term relationships were the foundation.

I thought of the analogy as I was making my seven layer taco dip for a New Year’s Eve party.

Contraception mandate: endangers religious liberty, women’s health

In implementing the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) now requires almost all private health plans to cover contraception and sterilization as “preventive services” for women.

Farm fresh and fabulous

grand mom

Some of my fondest memories of my childhood in the ‘30s were the Sunday afternoon visits to our country cousins.

We’d all pile into Daddy’s new model Chevy, (he sold them, so we always had a new one), drive the 20 miles or more to run in the fields, jump in the hay mow, and watch the animals warily, keeping a safe distance.
