Fr. Donald Lange publishes book

PLATTEVILLE — “I think it was in the late 1970s that I submitted a few articles to the Catholic Herald,” said Fr. Donald Lange, speaking about how his column — “Seeing with Jesus’ Eyes” — got started. His new book Seeing with Jesus’ Eyes — A Seasonal Reader was just published in December of 2020. “At first, I wondered in the Catholic Herald would accept my articles, but gradually, they did.”

What began as an occasional guest column eventually became something more regularly published in the paper.

“After I retired, Pam Payne asked me if I would offer a name for the column,” he said, speaking of the Herald’s now retired associate editor. “That was about 14 years ago.”

Communication initiatives in new diocese

Third in a series on the 75th anniversary of the Diocese of Madison

The Milwaukee Catholic Herald Citizen had been published for many years and often included news from southwestern Wisconsin and the Madison area.

However, Bishop William P. O’Connor wanted a diocesan newspaper for the new Diocese of Madison. In the fall of 1947, the Madison edition of the Catholic Herald Citizen made its debut.

Priest named editor

Bishop O’Connor asked Fr. Andrew R. Breines (later Msgr.), a diocesan priest, to take journalism courses at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He then became editor of the Madison paper in 1948. The paper’s name was changed to the Catholic Herald in 1982.

Colorado votes in favor of late-term abortion

One of the most heartbreaking results that has come out of this most recent election comes to us out of Colorado. Some faithful pro-life groups were able to put the question of banning late-term (after 22 weeks in utero) abortion on the ballot, and a majority of voters in Colorado voted in favor of late-term abortion. Let that sink in for a minute.

Do you know what late-term abortion entails? It entails the abortionist injecting the baby’s heart (through the mother’s abdomen) with a chemical that will cause cardiac arrest in the baby. Then, the mother is sent away until her baby is dead. Next, labor is induced. This labor can last for more than one day. The mother will give birth to an intentionally dead baby. There are 100,000 late-term abortions in the United States every year. Let that sink in for another minute. Father, forgive them, they know not what they do!

Make a list, check it twice

kevin-editorial

We love to make lists. Be they shopping lists, Christmas wish lists, bucket lists, or future vacation lists, we are always making lists.

They help to illustrate and organize thoughts and plans in our minds. They also aid us as reminders. We are less likely to forget something if it’s “on the list”.

‘I’ll pray for you’

A lot of people we know are going through challenges. You know what they are; I’ll spare you a hypothetical list.

Letters to the editor (10-22-2020)

Examine conscience before voting

This is my first and will be my only letter to the community. The upcoming election will be very important, as all elections are. I’m hoping that there won’t be untruths, name-calling, violence, and disrespect during the campaign.

My main reason for the letter is to convey the importance of life. There seems to be a total disregard for this important subject: violence, rioting, looting, shootings and killings in neighborhoods across the country, wars, and abortions.

‘I do belong in the Church’

During this challenging time, I have found it difficult to reconcile my faith and what I’ve heard from some in the Church.

This has caused me distress to the point where I’ve asked myself if I belong in the Church.

As I searched, Peter’s words came to mind, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”

‘I think it would be fun to run a newspaper’

kevin-editorial

For those of you out there wanting to know more about the new guy, the above headline of my first official editorial may give you some hint as to my personality and interests — I’m an old movie fan.

In taking this position at the Catholic Herald, there was no way I was going to let an opportunity pass by to quote the line from Citizen Kane — “I think it would be fun to run a newspaper”.

Those that have seen the 1941 classic know the line, and I certainly hope my fate later in life is not isolation in my own “Xanadu”-like castle.

For those of you who haven’t seen the movie yet, you should.

Angela Curio, new Catholic Herald administrative coordinator

MADISON — Angela Curio, resident of Madison and member of St. Maria Goretti Parish in Madison, has joined the staff of the Catholic Herald as its new administrative coordinator.

“I’m looking forward to working for the diocese and working for the paper,” Curio said.

She added that she hopes to connect and meet people all throughout the Diocese of Madison.

Curio called her faith her “stronghold” in life and looks forward to bringing that to her work at the Catholic Herald.
