Edgewood band collaborates with composer

MADISON — The Edgewood High School Band recently got to perform a piece of music very personal to them.

At the school’s band concert on May 4, one of the performed selections was called “Snapshots” — which was a commissioned work composed by Dr. Jack Stamp, with a large amount of input from the Edgewood band members.

Stamp is currently adjunct professor of music at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, where he teaches conducting.

Edgewood, St. Ambrose students come together to celebrate Catholic Schools Week

MADISON — While many students may have hoped for a snow day, and extra sleep, on February 2, the day’s less than anticipated snow fall gave them an opportunity to give thanks and give back.

Edgewood High School (EHS) students, along with high school students from St. Ambrose Academy in Madison, arrived at the EHS Wilke Gymnasium this morning for a Mass celebrating Catholic Schools Week.

The annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States ran from January 31 to February 6. Schools across the diocese had a variety of fun and faith-filled events for students, faculty, and parents.

What makes a Mass ‘Pontifical’

What's That All About column by Fr. John Zuhlsdorf

The third in a series by Fr. John Zuhlsdorf about the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite.

In this installment we can finally get into the nitty-gritty of what Bishop Robert C. Morlino of Madison does when he celebrates a “Pontifical Mass at the Throne” in the older, traditional, Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite as it has been for centuries before the Second Vatican Council (1962-65).

In the traditional form of Holy Mass there are distinct levels of solemnity, each carefully regulated.

For Masses of priests, we have “Low,” “High,” and “Solemn” Masses.

At Low Mass, all the texts are spoken, no incense is used, and you will see one or two altar boys.

Edgewood mathletes show GR8 results

MADISON — Edgewood High School (EHS) offers more than 27 athletic teams and 25 other co-curriculars, but when Edgewood High School math teacher Cathi Shaughnessy first organized a “Math Team” about a decade ago, the number of students interested in participating and traveling to meets at public schools throughout the city could fit in her car.

Now, there are enough student “mathletes” to field four teams of eight and, with alternates, up to 40 students attend the competitions by bus.
