Celebrating time, talent, and treasure

FORT ATKINSON — Catholic Schools Week is a time to celebrate Catholic education, including all those who support it and those who are learning from it.

St. Joseph School in Fort Atkinson recently took some time out of a busy school day to do just that.

Among a plethora of other activities, January 31 marked the day of an all-school assembly and talent show.

Veterans to be honored at national shrine in Champion

CHAMPION — Veterans Day at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help in Champion will include a special honor for those who have served our country in the armed forces.

“We want to pay tribute to veterans and say thank you for what they’ve done for all of us,” said Corrie Campbell, events and communications coordinator at the shrine. “We know that many soldiers have deep wounds, and not all of those wounds are physical. It’s important to continue to reach out to veterans and show them our support.”

Area veteran takes part in Badger Honor Flight

Since its inception in 2010, the Badger Honor Flight has flown more than 2,000 veterans to Washington, D.C., on what is called the “trip of a lifetime.”

Badger Honor Flight is a regional affiliate of the national Honor Flight Network.

The purpose of the network is to ensure that World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, and terminally ill veterans from any war have the opportunity to see the memorials that have been erected in their honor in the nation’s capital.

Retired Air Force Lt. Col. Dorothy Bollant, 81, recently got her chance at said “trip of a lifetime.”

Esteeming our elders

Occasionally we hear disturbing stories in the media about young people who perpetrate abuse against the elderly.

In a widely reported 2009 story, for example, caretakers at the Quadrangle Assisted Living facility outside Philadelphia were charged in connection with the abuse of an elderly patient named Lois McCallister. Three employees, aged 19, 21, and 22 were caught on a surveillance camera as they taunted, mocked, and assaulted the partially naked 78-year-old woman.

She had begun complaining to visiting family members several months prior that someone was hurting her and hitting her. There were also initial signs of bruising on her hand and wrist.

Give thanks to God every day

This column is the bishop’s communication
with the faithful of the Diocese of Madison. Any wider circulation reaches beyond the intention of the bishop.

Dear Friends,

My granny often repeated to me, “Bobby, getting old is not for sissies.” Granny lived to 96 and I’m only 65, but I can confirm that in this (as in most everything) granny was right on the money.

Last week, I headed out to Baltimore for the annual gathering of the bishops of the United States. We were just getting started with our meetings when I took a spill and fell (with full weight) face-first into the pavement. In the process I suffered several cuts, a broken nose, and a bruised knee. Thanks be to God, it wasn’t worse!

Fortunately there was another bishop and two priests right there with me, and I was off to Mercy Hospital, where the doctors forwarded me on to the University of Maryland Medical Center. If we could choose the timing of our accidents, I would have preferred, of course, to be with my own outstanding doctors at St. Mary’s, but as it turned out, the care I had was really top notch, and I remain so very grateful to all of those excellent women and men — each and every one of them.
