‘I never imagined trafficking could happen to our family’

Lisa never thought sex trafficking could happen to her family. It seemed like something that only happened in big cities, to people from “broken” homes, who didn’t go to church, and weren’t paying attention to their kids.

We should get educated about human trafficking

As someone who has three granddaughters living in Wisconsin, I am concerned that our state is one of worst states in our country in terms of both sex and labor trafficking.

That information was shared at Catholics at the Capitol held in March. “Human trafficking is happening in counties all over Wisconsin. It happens everywhere, in rural and urban areas and online,” said keynote speaker Colleen Stratton, a survivor of human trafficking and member of the Eye Heart World Outreach Team.

January is observed as National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month. It is an effort to raise awareness among businesses, national and community organizations, families, and all Americans to recognize the vital role we can play in ending all forms of slavery and to observe this month with appropriate programs and activities.

Support efforts to stop trafficking

At the recent Catholics at the Capitol in Madison, we heard about the dangers of human trafficking in our state and nation.

We need to invest more of our resources to fight against labor and sex trafficking, which sadly targets many young victims.

The U.S. House of Representatives took a step in the right direction on July 12. It passed an anti-trafficking bill which would put more than $500 million over the next four years into efforts to fight labor and sex trafficking both in the U.S. and abroad.

The tragedy of human trafficking

Imagine a young girl sexually abused in her home from the age of five.

By the age of 13, she was drinking and smoking. She ran away from home and ended up being a prostitute. She was beaten, burned, and ruled by fear by her pimp. She felt trapped in what they call “the life.”

Berlin audience hears about impact of human trafficking

BERLIN — On the evening of February 7, over 125 people filled the hall at All Saints Parish in Berlin to learn more about the impact of human trafficking at the local level.

Sr. Carol Haanen of 5-stones, an organization based in the Fox Valley that raises awareness about the dangers and magnitude of human trafficking in Wisconsin, shared startling statistics with the crowd.
