Bishop Jerome Hastrich known for his work with the poor and minorities

Thirteenth in a series on the 75th anniversary of the Diocese of Madison

As a priest and bishop, Bishop Jerome J. Hastrich will be remembered especially for his service to the poor and minorities.

He was asked in an interview for the Catholic Herald Citizen when he first became interested in helping the poor and minority groups. The native of Milwaukee answered, “About 1929 when I was in high school.” He added that it was during the Depression and his own family was poor.

Before he entered the seminary, he taught religion to the poor at Holy Cross summer school in Milwaukee and taught Sunday school at St. Benedict the Moor and St. Gabriel Parishes.

Witness of Faith: Bonnie Miller

COLUMBUS — “I’m kind of like a go-to person for the liturgy. I’m not listed on the bulletin or anything, but if Father’s got any questions it’s, ‘talk to Bonnie, call Bonnie.'”

If you’ve attended a Mass at St. Jerome Parish in Columbus any time in the past 30 years, you’ve seen the results of Bonnie Miller’s work.

In addition to her day job in which she puts in 30 hours a week, Miller serves as the parish’s unofficial “liturgist.”

Parish duties

If you ask her what that all entails, she’ll say, with humility, preparing a liturgical outline for the cantor, lector, organist, and celebrating priest for each Sunday’s Mass; selecting the music; preparing the church for Holy Week and other liturgical seasons; training new cantors and lectors — and that’s just a small summary. She also participates as a lector and Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion herself.

Multiple-purpose use

The parish hall is designed to be utilized for multiple purposes, including basketball hoops that are attractively hidden overhead with retracting doors. The floor is a sports carpet with the basketball court outlined in the design of the carpet.
