All invited to high-level international event

The myriad ways Catholics serve our corners of the world and Church is a credit to the beauty and diversity of the gifts given to each of us by the Lord.

Throughout the years, a number of sons and daughters of the Diocese of Madison have taken roles within the Church that serve an international scope.

One such example is Fr. John Putzer, a priest of the diocese, who has served in the diplomatic service of the Holy See since 2016 after completing four years of advanced studies in Rome.

No pork hock and sauerkraut dinner this year

MADISON — No pork hock and sauerkraut dinner will be held this year in the St. James Church basement.

The annual event that started decades ago with sauerkraut made by former Dane County Sheriff John Haas is taking a year off.

Haas’ son John continued the tradition of making the sauerkraut and offering it to the parish for the dinner usually held in February or March.

JANESVILLE — At the start of each Advent, St. John Vianney Parish in Janesville hosts an Advent-by-candlelight event called Lighting the Way for Women.

The event is designed to help women, who are typically very busy during the holidays, start their Advent off right by enjoying a peaceful evening of prayer, reflection, and fellowship.

Growing event

Each year, attendance for Lighting the Way has grown.

In 2019, more than 220 women gathered at St. John Vianney for the event.

As fall 2020 progressed, it became clear that increasing COVID concerns and limitations on gatherings would make it impossible to hold the popular event in person.

Kris Kranenburg, coordinator of adult faith formation at St. John Vianney and one of the event organizers, started to hear from women who were saddened that the gathering couldn’t take place.

“Women were sharing beautiful stories of how Lighting the Way helped them to regroup spiritually and keep their focus on the season of Advent,” said Kranenburg.

“We didn’t want to lose that, especially in 2020 when it felt like so many other things had been taken away.”

Recognizing that people were tired of tuning in for virtual events on platforms like Zoom, the decision was made to create a website that would offer a variety of content.

Promoting businesses, helping parishioners

Principal brightens teachers’ spirits with paper cutouts of students

SPRING GREEN — The motto of St. John the Evangelist Catholic School in Spring Green is, “We’re more than a school . . . We’re a family!”

This was evident by the disappointment among St. John’s teachers when they heard the news that schools would not be reopening for the rest of the school year. They all understood the reasoning, but they just miss their students so much.
