Let’s be ‘converts’ to our own faith

kevin-editorial

Several years ago (I’ve been here that long?), I wrote a feature story on a young woman who was in her parish’s RCIA program and was on the path to being a full member of the Catholic Church come Easter Vigil.

During my interview with her, she remarked, with a huge smile of anticipation, that she couldn’t wait to receive the Eucharist for the first time.

It made me pause and wonder if I ever felt that excited about Holy Communion.

I don’t think I felt that way at age eight when I received for the first time, and any sort of pumped up and glowy feeling probably lessened after that.

Remembering one of the best days ever

kevin-editorial

As I am looking at the calendar for October of 2020, and seeing we have a Friday, Oct. 16, coming up, I’m asking myself — How has it been five years already?

The last time October 16 fell on a Friday was in 2015.

My parish, St. Maria Goretti (SMG) in Madison, and the Diocese of Madison as a whole, had one of its most eventful days ever.

The relics of St. Maria Goretti came to the parish for nearly a 24-hour stay, part of the Pilgrimage of Mercy tour that had taken her relics around the country ahead of the Year of Mercy, which started later that year.

Happy belated feast day, St. Faustina!

kevin-editorial

Dear St. Faustina,

By now you’re probably aware of me.

It’s me, Kevin, the guy who has this devotion to you and to Divine Mercy and can get quite nerdy about it.

Ever since I first read about you and what the message of Divine Mercy is, I was hooked.

Knowing the meaning of ‘yes’

kevin-editorial

During what might be my 378th attempt to devote myself to praying the Rosary every day, I’m reading a book that contains meditations on each Mystery of the Rosary.

It’s no surprise that the first chapter is on the First Joyful Mystery — the Annunciation.

Here we find the Blessed Virgin Mary saying “yes” to the Archangel Gabriel to be the mother of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Words in the chapter go on to describe how Mary’s “yes” literally transformed the world.

Giving more attention to peaceful actions

kevin-editorial

During Memorial Day weekend, I sat in front of my TV, totally captivated by the images on the screen — live chaos on State St. and in the downtown area in Madison.

Our area’s version of the protests following the death of George Floyd had disintegrated into violence, looting, angry shouting, and even a police car set on fire live on TV among other negative pictures.

For those seeking dialogue, attention, and something good out of the day’s events, these actions left sour images in many minds as the week went on.

‘How is your prayer life?’

kevin-editorial

What is the one thing that we want to do more of, never make enough time for, are capable of doing in countless different ways, always wondering if we’re doing it right, are skeptical of its effectiveness, and the topic thereof is always seeming to pop up in our lives?

If you read the title of this editorial, you know it’s one of those words, and it’s not “how,” “is,” “your,” or life”.

Since you’ve made it to paragraph three, I’ll assume you know I’m talking about prayer, and you’re perfectly fine with this topic.

Whether it be in the confessional, in a conversation with a close friend or spiritual director, in a small group setting, or the occasional “sidewalk discipleship” encounter, talk of our struggles and challenges will come up.

‘I think it would be fun to run a newspaper’

kevin-editorial

For those of you out there wanting to know more about the new guy, the above headline of my first official editorial may give you some hint as to my personality and interests — I’m an old movie fan.

In taking this position at the Catholic Herald, there was no way I was going to let an opportunity pass by to quote the line from Citizen Kane — “I think it would be fun to run a newspaper”.

Those that have seen the 1941 classic know the line, and I certainly hope my fate later in life is not isolation in my own “Xanadu”-like castle.

For those of you who haven’t seen the movie yet, you should.

A walk to retreat, reflect, and remember

‘[Assistant] Editor’s View’
Kevin Wondrash

Those who know me well know that I like to walk. I’ll try to walk the one mile to Mass every weekend (when it is being celebrated publicly), and I’ll occasionally walk the 2.5 miles to work from my apartment on Madison’s west side.

If it were up to me, I’d walk everywhere instead of driving.

In my mind, unless you’re Richard Petty or A.J. Foyt, nothing good comes from driving.

Other than for practical reasons, I’ll also go for walks to satisfy the clichéd check boxes such as “getting out of the house” and “getting my steps in”.

Kevin Wondrash promoted to assistant editor of Catholic Herald

MADISON — Mary Uhler, editor of the Catholic Herald-Diocese of Madison, announces that Kevin Wondrash has been promoted to assistant editor of the paper.

He replaces Pam Payne, who retired in January after over 45 years on the newspaper’s staff.

“While serving as our reporter, Kevin has trained with Pam to do work on the production and outputting of pages we send to the printer along with other jobs such as posting articles and photos to our website,” said Uhler.

Enjoying ‘Day at the Dells’

More than 1,000 people took part in an enjoyable summer day partaking in some longtime traditions. …

These traditions, and others, were all part of the annual Day at the Dells, an event sponsored by the Apostolate for Persons with Disabilities-Diocese of Madison.
