Catholic Charities sponsors sixth annual Aging Conference

MADISON — “Positive Healthy Aging!” was the theme of the sixth annual Aging Conference sponsored by Catholic Charities Madison.

This year it was held on October 13 at the new All Saints Neighborhood Main Street and featured a keynote address, two panel discussions, breakout sessions, and exhibits.

Surge in voter turnout needs to continue

On Independence Day, I saw many in the Badger State wearing red, white, and blue. Like some of you, I “liked” statements on social media asserting national pride and joined in singing patriotic songs at Mass.

These celebrations affirm our democracy and recognize those who have protected our founding freedoms.

Importance of elections

However after reviewing past election results, I was reminded that everyone enjoys the celebration, but many people don’t like the planning. Elections are how we as citizens plan our government.

John Huebscher to retire after 29 years with WCC

MADISON — John Huebscher says that the Catholic Church has “always been tugging at my sleeve.”

“I’ve always been interested in the Church,” he said in an interview prior to his retirement this month as executive director of the Wisconsin Catholic Conference (WCC), the public policy voice of the state’s Catholic bishops.

“I even thought about entering the seminary,” he said. In fact, his pastor encouraged him to visit the seminary in Milwaukee in 1967 and he met the rector in his office.

Sacred Hearts School begins iPad initiative

SUN PRAIRIE — Seventh and eighth grade students at Sacred Hearts School returned this year a little more enthusiastic than usual.

Two years of research and planning by Principal Kim Frederick and the IT and junior high staff culminated in the students starting off their year with individual iPads.

Loaded with more than 70 apps that have been carefully chosen by their teachers to support the curriculum and enhance the learning atmosphere, the new iPad Airs also enable students to communicate with their teachers through iCal, iLife, and iTunes U.
