During my childhood, my family spent many summer days on a mile-long island on a lake in southeastern Wisconsin.
Boating, sailing, canoeing, fishing, waterskiing, tubing, and swimming were part of everyday life there. Knot tying, outdoor cooking, handling boats, hauling gear, reading the weather — all of these were a part of learning the value of hard work and gaining a deep appreciation of nature.
Among my many memories of the island there was someone who loved everyone on it.
WAUNAKEE — “We are starting a Kindness Revolution, today,” Principal Liz Goldman told the students of St. John the Baptist School in Waunakee.
The school held a Kindness Revolution pep rally on September 6 as part of the start to its school year.
The pep rally was attended by St. John students, along with some of their parents and other family members.
“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me” is an old adage many of us have heard. It means that someone can hurt another by physical force, but not by insults.
In the Bible, we find Jesus encouraged his followers to “turn the other cheek.” In the Sermon on the Mount, he urged them to respond to injury without revenge and allowing more injury to occur.
Still, I don’t agree with the “sticks and stones” adage, because words can indeed hurt people. These days, many use words to bully others.
MONONA — Immaculate Heart of Mary School is teaching more than reading, writing, and arithmetic — it is teaching love.
The school recently launched its “Teach Love” campaign.
Principal Callie Meiller said Teach Love is a “showcase for students . . . not only preparing them academically; we want them to go out into the world and be ready, not only smarts wise, but ready mind, body, and spirit to take on the world.”To the editor:
Thank you for your editorial, “What’s happening to our ‘perfect union’? Many politicians find divisive issues and exploit them.
When private sector workers began to lose their benefits, politicians began to attack the benefits of public sector employees. Their rhetoric fanned envy, often demonizing those who seemed to be better off.
To the editor:
In a time of crisis in our land, our people are called to repent, to pray, and to praise God. We are to be a prayerful, sacrificial people. We are to be a “Light for the World.”
We are to forgive and start anew. We are to recognize that God calls us to reconciliation. We must reach out to our neighbor — to start anew and seek the highest holiness.
The common ground must be love, peace, charity, and respect for others. Our history of kindness must be carried forward without reservation for past hurts.
