Keep Christ in Christmas: Something to remember during the busy holiday season

Editor's View by Mary C. Uhler

Remember when we used to wait until after Thanksgiving for Christmas decorations to be put up in public places and most homes? Now we start seeing Christmas decorations in September!

I still wait until after Thanksgiving to start decorating our home and do most of my Christmas shopping. The first Sunday of Advent should be the sign for Christians to start preparing the way of the Lord. After all, it’s Christ’s birthday that we are supposed to be celebrating on December 25.

It’s a child, not a choice: Ultrasounds have powerful impact on pregnant women

Editor's View by Mary C. Uhler

In October we celebrate Respect Life Month. This is a special opportunity for Catholics to reflect on issues involving respect for all life from womb to tomb.

During October, I will focus on various life issues in the “Editor’s View,” starting at the beginning of life. I also encourage people to read the special Respect Life section and other articles in this week’s print edition and online edition of the Catholic Herald.

Other Knights of Columbus councils formed since 2000

To the editor:

I congratulate my brother knights in Cambridge for how quickly you formed a new Knights of Columbus council. Your church, council, and community will benefit greatly from your commitment to the Robert C. Timmerman Council of St. Pius X Parish. You will be proud of the results of your efforts in the coming years.

The article appearing in a recent issue of the Catholic Herald contained an excellent review of the history of the Knights of Columbus and the projects the knights get involved in. It must have been a thrill for Fr. David Timmerman to have the council named after his father.

Knights, bishop raise $8,000 for hungry families

Bishop Robert C. Morlino receives a check for $7,826 from Ron Faust, state advocate of the Knights of Columbus, on behalf of the knights. The bishop rounded the funds up to $8,000 to help families in need of food throughout the diocese. (Catholic Herald photo/Kat Wagner)

MADISON — Knights of Columbus throughout the 11 counties that make up the Diocese of Madison have collected nearly $8,000 and turned the money over to Bishop Robert C. Morlino to feed local families in need.

Knights of Columbus state advocate Ron Faust presented Bishop Morlino with the check for $7,826 from their “Food for Families” initiative. In accepting the check on September 8, Bishop Morlino, himself a Knight of Columbus, offered to round out the amount to an even $8,000.

The bishop also made the determination as to how the funds would be effectively distributed through Catholic Charities of Madison, the official outreach arm of the Madison Diocese. He indicated that he wanted a portion of the funds to go to feeding families in the Madison area via the Catholic Multicultural Center’s food pantry and food program and the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry, both of whom operate food pantries on the city’s south side.
