Dr. Carolyn Woo to present St. Thérèse Lecture

Dr. Carolyn Woo

MADISON — Inspired by Pope Francis’ emphasis on charity and social justice, the Diocese of Madison’s Office of Evangelization and Catechesis has initiated several activities.

One is the sponsorship of two courses on Catholic Social Doctrine taught by Dr. Constance Nielsen throughout the year in different locations.

Another is a special event welcoming Dr. Carolyn Woo of Catholic Relief Services (CRS) to be the guest lecturer at this spring’s St. Thérèse Lecture.

Dr. Woo will address the topic “The One-Handed Gospel: You Did It for Me” (taken from the words of Blessed Mother Teresa)” on Friday, April 11, at 7:30 p.m. at the Bishop O’Connor Center, 702 S. High Point Rd.

Dr. Woo assumed the position of CEO and president of CRS in January of 2012. CRS was founded in 1943 by the Catholic bishops of the United States to serve World War II survivors in Europe. Since then, it has expanded in size to reach more than 100 million people in nearly 100 countries on five continents.

Representing CRS, Dr. Woo was featured in Foreign Policy (May/June, 2013) as one of the 500 most powerful people on the planet and one of only 33 in the category of “a force for good.”

Remembering the beauty of our Faith

Dear Friends,

This past Sunday, on the Solemn Feast of Christ the King, we concluded our Year of Faith celebrations.

The occasion was marked by Pope Francis in Rome — as he completed what Pope Benedict had begun, with the inspiration of the Lord.

I marked the occasion at the celebration of my Stational Mass at St. Patrick Church in Madison, and hopefully you all marked the occasion with some particular focus upon the Creed in your own parishes and in your own families.

A look at homeschooling families in the Diocese of Madison

MADISON — Almost 7,500 students attend Catholic schools in the Diocese of Madison. That leads to a rough estimate of almost 100 students per school.

When you compare that number to the more than 300 students in more than 85 families who participate in the Holy Family Homeschoolers (HFH) program in the diocese, one can see it is a viable and growing option for families.

Camp Gray 60 years ago was built on faith, fun, and dynamite

BARABOO — Parishioners at St. Joseph Parish in Baraboo helped Fr. Francis Xavier Gray — later Monsignor Gray — buy the land for a Reedsburg youth camp on Shady Lane in the early 1950s.

Not long after, they used dynamite to clear stumps from the athletic field and built cabins from wood they salvaged from crates of ordnance produced at the nearby Badger Army Ammunition Plant just outside of Baraboo.

Love Begins Here does ‘small things with great love’

On a sunny Thursday morning in late June, dozens of teens made their way downstairs to the parish hall at St. Bernard Parish in Middleton. They just spent the fourth of five nights sleeping on the floor of a classroom. While it doesn’t sound like a fun way to spend part of their summer vacation, they love it.
