Equipping the family: Having critical conversations

We all know it’s there and probably have some idea of how we could access it. Pornography affects some of us more directly than others, but there’s no doubt that porn is a problem impacting all of us, and regrettably, it’s not going away anytime soon.

Porn has created a culture of its own, and this culture is influencing each one of us spiritually, physically, emotionally, and relationally to a greater or lesser extent depending on if we directly participate in the use of pornography. There are immense moral, social, and spiritual dangers for us and even for our children.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul holds 28th annual Recycle the Warmth blanket drive

MADISON — For good health, school or work success, and general well-being, the warmth and comfort of a good night’s sleep matters to everyone.

But not everyone in our community has a clean, warm blanket to call his or her own this winter, so the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Madison is holding its 28th annual Recycle the Warmth blanket drive to collect thousands of donated new and gently used clean blankets and other bedding.

The blankets and bedding will be given away to families or individuals living in low-income households in Dane County.

Bishop Hying visits Cross Plains parish, school

CROSS PLAINS — St. Francis Xavier Parish in Cross Plains had the special honor of having Bishop Donald J. Hying visit our parish and school on Thursday, Dec. 19.

The bishop presided at the 8:15 a.m. school Mass and then spent time in each of our classrooms talking and praying with students.

Bishop Hying to speak at dinner

MADISON — The 2020 St. Thomas Aquinas Dinner and Lecture is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 23, at Blessed Sacrament Parish in Madison.

Bishop Donald J. Hying will be the program speaker. He will focus on St. Catherine of Siena, her work with the Church, and her example of discipleship.

The event marks the feast of St. Thomas Aquinas and is part of the parish’s annual four-part series to honor Dominican saints on their feast days.

HAZEL GREEN — After a snowy drive to the southwest corner of the state, Bishop Donald Hying traveled to St. Joseph School, Hazel Green, to celebrate Mass and visit with the students and staff.

Bishop Hying, Fr. Ken Frisch, and Deacon Larry Tranel celebrated 8:15 a.m. Mass with the students as well as a full church of family members, parishioners, and friends.

Latinos celebrate Christ the King with Bishop Hying

On Sunday, Nov. 24, the Latino community of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in Madison and from nearby parishes came together to celebrate the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. Most Reverend Donald Hying, bishop of Madison, celebrated their 6:30 p.m. Spanish Mass with Fr. Bart Timmerman, pastor of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish.

Lessons & Carols continues a tradition on Sunday, Dec. 22

MADISON — Continuing a tradition of 30-plus years, the Madison Diocesan Choir will present Lessons & Carols on Sunday, Dec. 22, at Holy Name Heights, accompanied by orchestra, harp, and organ in performing works of Fauré, Handel, and Mendelssohn, all celebrating the Savior’s birth.

Bishop Donald J. Hying will preside, his first Lessons & Carols as the new bishop of the Diocese of Madison. With Dr. Patrick Gorman directing the choir, the Advent service will begin at 4 p.m. in the Holy Name Oratory, 702 South High Point Rd.
