Food pantry gardens seek leaders to sustain mission

Third and last in a series on the Madison Area Food Pantry Gardens.

MADISON — The Madison Area Food Pantry Gardens (MAFPG) has a pressing need for two garden leaders, and replacing them poses a major challenge for the nonprofit organization in growing fresh produce for the poor.

Tom Parslow and Phil Cox are seeking new recruits to run the gardens they manage. Both worked as volunteers alongside Emmett Schulte, who founded the food pantry gardens with Ken Witte in 2000. In time, Schulte asked them to become garden leaders.

Students share messages of love, anti-bullying

MADISON — Kindness, acceptance, and inclusion were the words of the day recently at Our Lady Queen of Peace (QP) School in Madison.

October 19 marked a national Unity Day where students would “make it orange” and “make it end”.

Students across the nation, as well as those at QP, participated in the day by wearing orange and showing a message of support, hope, and unity to show that they are united against bullying and for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion.

Schoenstatt Shrine has busy Year of Mercy

The Schoenstatt Founder Shrine in Madison has one of three Doors of Mercy in the Diocese of Madison during the Jubilee Year of Mercy, which continues until November 20. (Photo (c) by Robert J. Arntz)

MADISON — It has been a busy year at the Schoenstatt Founder Shrine in Madison, primarily because the shrine was designated as a Door of Mercy during the Church’s Jubilee Year of Mercy.

During the Year of Mercy, the Diocese of Madison designated three Holy Doors. The other two sites are at the Cathedral Parish: St. Patrick Church and Holy Redeemer Church in Madison.

Place of pilgrimage

The doors provide a place of pilgrimage and they bear with them a plenary indulgence granted by Pope Francis.

The possibility for an indulgence comes under the usual conditions: a person must be in the state of grace, make a sacramental Confession, receive the Holy Eucharist, pray for the intentions of the Holy Father, and have the interior disposition of being detached from sin, including venial sin.

People have until November 20 to take advantage of this opportunity to pass through a Door of Mercy.

Busy year

According to Sr. M. Catherine Ditto, Schoenstatt Movement coordinator in the Diocese of Madison, “It has been a busy year at our shrine. About 550 people each month have visited the shrine from different parishes, schools, and organizations.”

Vote for the future of our nation

Dear Friends,

If you weren’t certain before, after this current election season, I hope you’ve now come to understand and believe that we are not in heaven!

I love the United States of America. I truly believe that our Founding Fathers had it right in so many ways, and that we have enjoyed a country that has provided — albeit still imperfectly — levels of freedom and opportunity for more people than any other in history. Nevertheless, I never made the mistake of thinking that this was heaven, or that some perfect candidate or party was ever going to usher in God’s Kingdom here on earth.

On Tuesday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m. in the chapel at Holy Name Heights, Bishop Morlino, with clerical and lay ministers, will celebrate a Pontifical Requiem Mass “at the Throne” in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite.

Madison Area Food Pantry marks 17th season

First in a series on the Madison Area Food Pantry Gardens.

MADISON — Every Saturday during the growing season, they would meet on the Capital Square in downtown Madison before 12 noon, farmers’ market gleaners seeking fresh produce the vendors didn’t sell: some fruit but mostly vegetables for food pantries serving the poor.

First in a series on the Madison Area Food Pantry Gardens.
