Hundreds pack meals to ‘feed my sheep’

MADISON — “You are the Gospel today.”

Those were the words of Msgr. Ken Fiedler during his homily at a Mass attended by dozens of volunteers, some of whom had put in an eight-hour day.

For the fourth year in a row, the Catholic Multicultural Center in Madison was busy with people of all ages packing meals for the hungry in the area and around the world.

Divine Mercy Sunday to be celebrated on April 12

MADISON/SAUK CITY/ MONONA — St. John Paul II declared in the Great Jubilee year 2000 that throughout the Church, the Sunday after Easter will be known as Divine Mercy Sunday.

Divine Mercy message

The message of the Divine Mercy is that God is love itself poured out for us and this love is more powerful than any kind of evil in which individuals, humanity, or the world are entangled. All need Divine Mercy.

Take steps to engage in healing, growth

To the editor:

I was happy to read your editorial that discussed the recent shooting of a young black man in Madison.

A major part of the piece is the subject of the letter written by a group of 90 religious leaders in the Madison area.

I had to go elsewhere online to read the full letter and to see the list of people who signed this call for action. However, I was saddened by the fact that none of the signers were Catholic priests, nor was Bishop Morlino a signer.

MADISON — Fr. Francis “Father Rocky” Hoffman presented Bishop Robert C. Morlino with the first Christ Brings Hope Award in the Diocese of Madison at the festive Relevant Radio dinner held at the Edgewater Hotel on March 19.

Father Hoffman is the executive director of Relevant Radio, which presents the Christ Brings Hope Award on behalf of the staff and supporters of the Catholic radio network to “an American Catholic who has worked with extraordinary dedication to bring the good news and hope of Christ to all souls.

“This person exemplifies the virtues of charity, generosity, hope, apostolic zeal, and love for the Truth,” said Father Hoffman.

Father Hoffman said of Bishop Morlino, “Through his selfless and dedicated work in the New Evangelization, Bishop Morlino serves as a solid example of what it means to bring the hope of Jesus Christ to thousands of souls. Relevant Radio is personally blessed to have his support and to serve the Diocese of Madison through WHFA 1240 AM.”

Courageous leader

Msgr. Delbert Schmelzer, pastor emeritus in the Diocese of Madison and former director of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith in the diocese, gave the blessing at the dinner.

Monsignor Schmelzer said that for the past 12 years, Bishop Morlino “has been a courageous leader in our diocese. We ask God to shower him and the diocese with blessings.”

Edgewood mathletes show GR8 results

MADISON — Edgewood High School (EHS) offers more than 27 athletic teams and 25 other co-curriculars, but when Edgewood High School math teacher Cathi Shaughnessy first organized a “Math Team” about a decade ago, the number of students interested in participating and traveling to meets at public schools throughout the city could fit in her car.

Now, there are enough student “mathletes” to field four teams of eight and, with alternates, up to 40 students attend the competitions by bus.

Lenten Holy Hour for women

MADISON — Lent is a time for fasting, prayer, self-reflection, and entering into the suffering and beauty of the cross. It is a time to find our true identity in the mystery of the cross.

As women in the Church, we look for examples of how to unite ourselves to Christ and share in his mission to the world.

Wisdom from St. John Paul II

St. John Paul II gave women wisdom and insight into this through letters and documents focused on the dignity and vocation of women.

Dead Theologians Society grows, finds home in Diocese of Madison

MADISON — On March 3, Bishop Robert C. Morlino issued a Decree Conferring Private Juridic Personality upon Dead Theologians Society. This decree, in fact, now allows the Dead Theologians Society (DTS) to function as a Private Diocesan Lay Association of the Faithful.

What started in 1997 as an idea with a group of teens in Florida who were part of a parish youth group, led by Eddie Cotter, Jr., has since grown to become an international apostolate.

What kind of state do we want?

Wisconsin is a great state! I was born and raised in Wisconsin, and I enjoy living and working in our state.

Despite some very cold temperatures and heavy snowfalls, unlike some people I know, I’m not eager to spend months in other warmer states. I actually enjoy the change of seasons and the natural beauty of Wisconsin.

Best place to live

In 2014, it was no surprise that Madison was named number one out of the Top 100 Best Places to Live on Livibility’s annual ranking.
