Why it matters what the bishop is wearing

What's That All About column by Fr. John Zuhlsdorf

The fourth in a series by Fr. John Zuhlsdorf about the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite.

We are looking into what bishops do when they celebrate the Pontifical Mass in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite.

Since you may see reports that Bishop Robert C. Morlino of Madison occasionally offers these Masses, you may be wondering what that’s all about, what he’s up to.

Last week we closed with a look at how the fine elements of reverent liturgy, the beautiful vestments and so forth, are not really about the glorification of the priest or bishop. They are about the perfect spotless only Holy One, Christ the High Priest/Victim at the altar of Sacrifice.

Edgewood, St. Ambrose students come together to celebrate Catholic Schools Week

MADISON — While many students may have hoped for a snow day, and extra sleep, on February 2, the day’s less than anticipated snow fall gave them an opportunity to give thanks and give back.

Edgewood High School (EHS) students, along with high school students from St. Ambrose Academy in Madison, arrived at the EHS Wilke Gymnasium this morning for a Mass celebrating Catholic Schools Week.

The annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States ran from January 31 to February 6. Schools across the diocese had a variety of fun and faith-filled events for students, faculty, and parents.

What makes a Mass ‘Pontifical’

What's That All About column by Fr. John Zuhlsdorf

The third in a series by Fr. John Zuhlsdorf about the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite.

In this installment we can finally get into the nitty-gritty of what Bishop Robert C. Morlino of Madison does when he celebrates a “Pontifical Mass at the Throne” in the older, traditional, Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite as it has been for centuries before the Second Vatican Council (1962-65).

In the traditional form of Holy Mass there are distinct levels of solemnity, each carefully regulated.

For Masses of priests, we have “Low,” “High,” and “Solemn” Masses.

At Low Mass, all the texts are spoken, no incense is used, and you will see one or two altar boys.

In spite of our sinfulness, God rescues us

Dear Friends,

By the time that you read this, we’ll likely have jumped right into Lent. It’s one of those years in which the gap between the end of Christmas and the start of Lent is a bit abrupt. Nevertheless, in so many ways, the readings of this past Sunday end up being particularly fitting for a pre-Lenten exhortation — especially in this Year of Mercy!

Celebrating the Pontifical Mass at the Throne

What's That All About column by Fr. John Zuhlsdorf

The second in a series by Fr. John Zuhlsdorf about the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite.

In this short series, we are looking into what Bishop Robert C. Morlino has been doing with the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite.

You will occasionally see a news story about him celebrating a “Pontifical Mass at the Throne.”

You might not be familiar with that. In the first article, we had a whirlwind explanation of what the Roman Rite is. Now we must drill more deeply.

Bishop Morlino issues statement on Holy Thursday washing of feet ritual

MADISON — On Thursday, Jan. 21, the Vatican Congregation for Divine Worship announced that Pope Francis had issued the declaration that “from now on, the people chosen for the washing of the feet in the Liturgy of Holy Thursday may be selected from all the People of God, and not only men . . . ,” thus changing the rule and allowing women to be among those chosen to have their feet washed during the Holy Thursday ritual for the first time.

As with every change in the ritual or law of the Church, the practices and permissions in the Diocese of Madison will be in full accord with those of the Universal Church.

Upon learning of the announcement, Bishop Robert C. Morlino offered the following statement:

Requiem Mass for the unborn

PINE BLUFF — There will be a Requiem Mass for the unborn celebrated on Sunday, Jan. 24, at 6 p.m. at St. Mary of Pine Bluff Church, 3673 County Road P, Cross Plains.

This Mass will be celebrated in memory of all who have died from abortion in the Diocese of Madison in the past year.

Women and men who have experienced the pain and anguish of having had an abortion — or being involved in one — find a liturgy for the unborn to be a source of hope and grace.
