On Friday evening, Feb. 9, Matt Walsh will be speaking at St. Mary of Pine Bluff Church.

Walsh is a nationally recognized Christian writer, blogger, and speaker with a large national following. His provocative writings on political and cultural subjects are read by millions of people a month.

Through his enormous social media following, he engages with hundreds of thousands of people every day. Walsh is known through his writing and his speeches as a fierce and articulate defender of truth, moral values, and the Christian faith. Walsh lives in Maryland with his wife and two children.

St. Ambrose Academy to present Annie

VERONA — Students, staff, and volunteers at St. Ambrose Academy are gearing up to present another musical production.

After last year’s successful and award-winning production of Beauty and the Beast, the school is putting the finishing touches on the family favorite Annie.

This year’s musical will again have a live orchestra as part of the full-length version of the production.

The website for the recent Broadway production describes Annie as the story of a lovable orphan, the title character, who goes on a spirited journey with next-to-nothing at an orphanage and finds her ideal family with big-hearted billionaire Oliver “Daddy” Warbucks.

Too often in the news and rumored around the world, we hear about incidents of bad sportsmanship to the point of people physically fighting with other parents, players, and coaches. When did giving it your best and playing as a team become not enough? Has winning become that important?

When I was younger, I played at the highest-level possible of soccer, and I can’t remember a time when sportsmanship and effort were not number one. Yes, you won’t find a more competitive person but not at all cost.

When Matt Hasselbeck, the Seattle Seahawks quarterback, was a Boston College junior, he volunteered to spend eight days in the missions of Jamaica during spring break.

The people’s poverty shocked him. But their faith, especially the faith of George McVee, a leper, inspired him.

George, a horribly disfigured leper, had no money, no nose, no feet or hands. Yet he daily thanked God for his blessings.
