PINE BLUFF — The Ladies of Divine Mercy will host Bonnie Engstrom at St. Mary of Pine Bluff Church on Friday, March 15, at 7 p.m.
Engstrom is a writer, baker, speaker, blogger, and homemaker. She is a cradle Catholic born and raised in Central Illinois. Bonnie and her husband have seven children.
In her presentation, “The Longest Hour — The Story of My Son, a Soon-To-Be Saint, and a Miracle,” she will share her son’s miraculous healing through the intercession of Venerable Fulton J. Sheen.MADISON — Bishop Robert C. Morlino of Madison recently presented three checks to Jackson Fonder, CEO and president of Catholic Charities Madison.
One check, totaling $185,000, was from the 2017 Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA). This money came from additional proceeds made available when the diocese reached its giving goal for the year.
The Diocese of Madison has supported Catholic Charities with more than $400,000 from last year’s ACA.This year, Divine Mercy Sunday will be observed on April 8.
In the Great Jubilee Year 2000, St. John Paul II declared that throughout the Catholic Church, the Sunday after Easter will be known as Divine Mercy Sunday.
St. John Paul II referred to the many instructions that Jesus gave to St. Faustina. Her diary records 14 occasions when Jesus requested that a Feast of Divine Mercy (Divine Mercy Sunday) be observed.
Mr. Studinski made a great point in the December 7 issue about the importance of many other things that weren’t mentioned explicitly in my November 23 piece about what it means to be a practicing Catholic, such as the Works of Mercy and the Beatitudes.
But there was a reason for emphasizing the commandments. The terminology of “practicing Catholic” is one typically used to specify a minimum requirement for fulfilling certain functions within the Church (e.g. catechist, school teacher, godparent, etc.). And in the moral life, although the Works of Mercy and the Beatitudes are certainly more perfect than merely observing the commandments, yet still observing the commandments is the minimum.
A Catholic Herald letter by Kenneth R. Studinski calls guidance about what it means to be a practicing Catholic “a list of assumed credentials for an acting Catholic,” however he says being a “practicing Catholic” requires the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy.
I reflect that Works of Mercy that are authentic Christian charity are fruits of the life of grace that we received first at Baptism and have and preserve through faith by the sacraments, prayer, embrace of Catholic teaching, and ordered participation in the life of the Church. It is reductionistic to call these things “assumed credentials” when they are profoundly necessary to our incorporation in the Body of Christ and having His life, the life of grace.

I am writing about John Joy’s piece in the Diocese section of your November 23 edition.
I am concerned that the conference of Catholic educators, John, and others have missed the point of the Bible and the Church. What was given as the “meaning to be a ‘Practicing Catholic’” is more a list of assumed credentials for an acting Catholic but not a practicing Catholic.

After the 13 Reasons Why debut that dramatizes the reasons behind one teen girl’s suicide, there has been a significant amount of discussion regarding teenage suicide and preventing such actions.
Some authors have debated whether or not the Netflix series will harm or help adolescents when navigating both their own and their peers’ feelings regarding this important topic.
Here, however, I wish to discuss ways that you can identify whether or not your teen (or an adolescent you know) is at risk for taking their life, and then what you can do to help.

At. St. Patrick Parish in Cottage Grove, there will be Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament at 2:50 p.m., followed by praying of the Chaplet of Divine Mercy at 3 p.m. Adoration, private Confession, and recitation of the Rosary will also take place.
At Blessed Sacrament Parish in Madison, Confessions will be heard at 1 p.m. with Mass at 2 p.m. and Chapel and image blessing at 3 p.m.

Pope Francis declared 2016 as a Jubilee Year of Mercy. However, few people realized that human mercy had its inception about 2,300 B.C, that’s 4,300 years ago, when Hammurabi reigned as the sixth king of the Babylonia Dynasty.
He noticed that people often wanted to “get even” when someone offended them. It had a snow ball effect as many times retaliation ended in a fashion of extreme violence.
