High school ministry goes beyond Confirmation

VERONA — Now in its second year, the High School Ministry program at St. Christopher Parish in Verona is striving to be a community where all teens can be heard, feel like they belong, and form authentic friendships through discussions, prayer, study, and social activities.

The program is a separate entity from the parish’s Confirmation program for teens, who are confirmed in the fall of their 10th grade year.

For Youth Ministry and Confirmation Coordinator Doug Ulaszek, High School Ministry is about the teens “being formed beyond Confirmation” and striving to “change the mentality” from teens being done with their faith formation following the Sacrament of Confirmation.

Thousands venerate relics of St. Maria Goretti in Madison

It was a birthday party unlike any other.

“This has been unbelievable . . . the greatest experience ever for this parish.”

Those words from Msgr. Michael Burke, pastor of St. Maria Goretti Parish in Madison, are the simplest way to sum up the 24-hour period in which the relics of St. Maria Goretti were at the parish from the morning of October 16 — the 125th anniversary of her birth — to the morning of October 17.

God is calling each person and nation to repent

“The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the Gospel.” With these two compelling sentences — as recorded in the Gospel of Mark — Jesus inaugurates his ministry and sums up what his mission is about: to break the shackles of sin that enslave humanity, to put us on the path of liberation from all oppression, and to teach us how to unconditionally love one another.

But what does it mean to repent?

Striving to avoid sin and living virtuously is certainly part of what it means. But there’s more.

A radical change

In the Gospels, the biblical word used for repentance is the Greek word metanoia — a radical change of mind, heart, soul, and action.
